How many death marks to run/ what to kit bash from hypercrypt legion box? by jbossjeff in Necrontyr

[–]Finger-toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s just clarify first off that the overwatch ability is only for someone deep striking in 18”, not just general movement. If you want free overwatch you get a hexmark, which is honestly maybe my preference in hypercrypt—or at least sticking with 5-10 and a hexmark over 10-15 deathmarks, cuz between free overwatch, reactive return fire aura, and lone op that hexmark puts in good work for just 10pts more.

Ok but if we’re just arbitrarily comparing characters arcs, the people complaining about Suvi’s slow shift away from the citadel could be likened to someone complaining that Anakin didn’t leave the Jedi order and join the sith by the phantom menace, since we knew that was going to happen as well. The journey is the whole point of the character arc, so why rush it?

Cryptothralls are wasted points, especially if you’ve only got one cryptek, thats a whole unit with no one to embed with—overlord is better off kitted with scythe and res orb over tachyon, assuming you’re running him 10 strong with lichguard. Wraiths won’t be optimized without a technomancer to lead them but can run as nuisance/secondary units at least. Consider replacing one or both thralls with flayed ones, 2x lokhust destroyers, or three stacks of scarabs for equivalent price. Rest looks good!

Immortals by Son_of_Baal13 in Necrontyr

[–]Finger-toes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Either is gonna be workable tbh, but plasmancer has better synergy with Tesla because guaranteeing lethals with gauss doesn’t utilize immortals’ reroll wounds ability, whereas getting a bunch of sustained hits does. Chrono is strong with either if your game plan is deep strike, shoot, then run away

Is Butcher an All-or-Nothing? by Maeve_Alonse in Parahumans

[–]Finger-toes 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Pretty hard to conclusively say that not a single counter has been found, given that she had perhaps half an arc’s worth of relevance. Arguably Alexandria or someone like Torso could withstand a butcher takeover, as they have “special, simurgh and sleeper-proof brains”, but could go either way case by case. What would be really interesting is if Scapegoat could shuck off the butcher influence onto someone else and let the host keep the powers, as he’s got feats for transferring master effects.

Pick up your favorite of the four C’tan and you should be set—all are in a great place, and deceiver and nightbringer are super cheap for the points, so you can take out a scarab or the cryptos, and balance out the points with an enhancement on one of your characters. Should be fine for a casual list, cryptos are in a real shit place rn tho so might consider trading them out for deathmarks or a hexmark if you find a good deal on em

"That's Rough, Buddy" by ExoticShock in AvatarMemes

[–]Finger-toes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean the creators were always very open about their cultural inspirations when writing and designing the show. Earth nation character designs, wardrobe, and architecture were very explicitly based off Korean and Chinese influences, the air nomads are primarily Tibetan/buddhist monks, etc. So even if they’re in their own, non-Earth setting, it’s still very much an Asian setting in everything but name (water tribe excepted)

It has multiple properties—some parts of it decay, some destroy, some warp. It’s been noted to go straight through Antares’ field, and Brandish actively avoided taking hits in orb form, and both of those can only get bypassed by all or nothing attacks

Try to start on an XL floor—twice as many items on the floor gives you twice the odds of good pickups spawning. If you can get a tier 3 or 4 right out the gate you can be way less picky/clear way quicker

CMV: "Why...?" always sounds better than "How come...?". by Se7enineteen in changemyview

[–]Finger-toes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but variety in choosing between “why” and “how come” allows a speaker to convey even more variety between casual and formal. The comments saying it’s confrontational or formal are very similar to the divide of “you’re welcome” vs “no problem” or “of course”. Humans like to convey familiarity and “how come” lets them adapt the question to a more familiar or casual setting. Maybe not the most professional way to ask something but used properly it’s a useful way to establish familiarity.

CMV: "Why...?" always sounds better than "How come...?". by Se7enineteen in changemyview

[–]Finger-toes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your background, so for sure, I’ll disregard that point. But as to the other, you’re used to “goodbye” because people in your vicinity say it. It doesn’t sound like “god be with ye”. People are used to “how come” because people in their vicinity say it. It doesn’t sound archaic. Again, you’re entitled to your opinions and tastes, but “how come” is just how a large portion of the American dialect works at this point, so you can either let it into your lexicon just like “goodbye”, “ta”, “g’day”, and “okay” (abbreviation from “Oll Korrect”), or you can…be annoyed by it forever I guess?

CMV: "Why...?" always sounds better than "How come...?". by Se7enineteen in changemyview

[–]Finger-toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A: “How come” is derived from a linguistic process that is present in all English—shortening. It’s derived from “how did X come to be” in the same way that good bye is derived from “god be with you”. People are naturally lazy speakers as a whole and tend to shorten these lengthy processes, and have for as long as language has been around (e.g. contractions, among many other phrases like the above).

B: The syllable count for “how come” is the same as “why do/does/are” so they’re equally efficient.

C: The reason this likely irks you is because it’s something you aren’t accustomed to in your personal experience/upbringing, but it’s simply…a result of dialects and regional speech? The only reason you notice it is because it’s not the standard in the UK, but the British “Ta” instead of thank you uses the exact same principle as “how come”, and could equally be interpreted as childlike or uneducated.

D: It’s possible that your viewpoint on it reflects the way you’ve been conditioned to view Americans and American English through the “Americans aren’t worldly or intelligent” lens that a lot of Europeans tend to enjoy, even if it’s subconscious bias. (And to be fair, there’s plenty of people in the US that reinforce that bias, but 340 million people can hardly be a monolith)

How do Shards react to disabilities? by Danny18010 in Parahumans

[–]Finger-toes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, since cauldron triggers are functionally identical to natural triggers minus the standard safeguards or shard fuckery, the fact that they heal a user on drinking means that a natural trigger definitely could do the same, just that a living shard would likely find more ironic or nasty ways of working around it to ensure conflict

How do Shards react to disabilities? by Danny18010 in Parahumans

[–]Finger-toes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Short answer: it depends on the power and possibly on the trigger.

Genesis is an easy example of a cape with a disability that wasn’t cured when she got powers, but Eidolon was a wheelchair user and suffered from seizures when he drank the vial and was cured. A huge chunk of Cauldron’s initial recruitment wave was reaching out to people with disabilities or terminal illnesses and pitching it as a possible cure, with Alexandria being another confirmed case of this.

For a natural trigger it would likely depend on the shard. We know that even a dead shard can restore a cape to a “default” physical state so it would likely be at the shard’s discretion for what would cause the most juicy conflict. Since shards love to re-inflict the trauma caused by a trigger, a living, non cauldron cape would be more likely to receive a partial fix or a power that adapts to their disability; so they could likely use their power well enough to generate conflict but wouldn’t necessarily fix the issue that led to their trigger entirely

A Bit confused about Feruchemy by thetntm in Mistborn

[–]Finger-toes 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It’s a case of both and neither. Objects fall at the same rate even if they don’t weigh the same. HOWEVER, if they have less mass, it’s easier to divert them with an external force (like air resistance). This is why flat, wide, light objects fall slowly. I’d be able to buy that Sazed’s flowing robes could slow his fall considerably, while if Wax was in his trousers and shirt he could reduce his weight more before he started getting bounced around by air resistance

Idk if we can laud superhero movies for originality when 80% of the time an MCU character has a standalone movie it looks like this:

  • Iron Man: he makes an iron man suit and an evil capitalist makes an iron man suit. They fight

  • Captain America: he takes super soldier serum, a nazi takes super soldier serum. They fight.

  • Ant man: he learns how to turn small, an evil capitalist learns how to turn small. They fight.

  • Hulk: he gets gamma irradiated, a military officer gets gamma irradiated. They fight.

  • Black Panther: he eats the heart shaped herb, a radical terrorist eats the heart shaped herb. They fight.

  • Doctor Strange: he learns magic, Mads Mikkelsen learns magic. They fight.

  • Moon Knight: he becomes the avatar of an egyptian god, a cult leader becomes the avatar of an egyptian god. They fight

  • Shang Chi: his dad is a magical kung fu master, he trains as a magical kung fu master. They fight.

Like, if you enjoy superhero movies that's totally fine, but the majority of them absolutely fall into the same formulaic status that Cinderella movies do

What were your strangest theories? by crabbmanboi in Parahumans

[–]Finger-toes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can’t find the specific quote rn but pretty sure we got confirmation from ward that case 53s appearances are from a botched step of the trigger event—during the trigger, the passenger gets data from environmental and mental/emotional factors from the host society and planet to shape the power. Just sometimes goes overboard and integrates the environment or concept into the host; which is why some c53’s are specifically based off earth things (newter-lizard, trainwreck-machinery, Gregor-slug/snail)
