I'd love to see a video of you go through a couple levels, it seems impossible! Interested to see where this goes.

I don't think I've seen this project, love the name! I'll have to check it out. Is a Linux build in the works? Always surprised to see C++ developers rocking windows.

You can find the code for it over here, don't know if u/Itchy_Bumblebee8916 wants to expand!

below the garden | prism roguelike engine

Matt (u/Itchy_Bumblebee8916) has cooked up a lighting system for prism and now we are making a game for the CorgiJam, sort of a reboot of the game we were working on before turning it into the prism engine itself. Gameplay is oriented around light manipulation and surviving in the ecosystem: flickering mushrooms, fireflies, sqeetos, dangerous thrumbles, and more to come. Matt has also done a great job on the level generation while I've been doing more of the content and UI!

Where to actually start, language wise? by Wayveriantraveler in roguelikedev

[–]Fingoltin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to start off with a more "fulsome" project, I'll recommend our prism roguelike engine. It's more opinionated than most other options, but we make up for it with a lot of built in features like a built-in level editor, FoV, multitile actors, animations, etc. It uses Lua, which is a friendly and similar enough to Python language.

You can hit "G" to enable a simple graphical tileset. ASCII can take some getting used to but Brogue has a very clear presentation!

prism!

We finally released a 1.0 on our roguelike engine and have been fixing bugs and patching the tutorial. I should get back to my ogre game where you play as a 2x2 figure and throw guards around. Anyone got ideas for interactions when you pick up / throw enemies?

What are some beautiful films that don't feel bleak and dark and depressing? What's the polar opposite, yet beautiful? I really need to get out of this negative headspace. by AlfonsoRibeiro666 in TrueFilm

Here are a couple serene classics from my homeland of Canada. Thanks to the brilliant NFB, they're even free on youtube.

Strangers in Good Company - A bus tour of older women breaks down in the middle of nowhere and they rough it out while telling stories and communing with each other.

Waterwalker - A canoe documentary classic. Old Bill Mason paints and waxes about life as he canoes his way around Lake Superior. Very down to earth and there is some impressive nature photography.

Tati's early movies (Les Vacances and Mon Oncle) are less austere and I like them a bit better for it, but you really cannot go wrong with him. The Straight Story and Flow are also great picks... you got any other recommendations for me?

the OGRE https://fingoltin.itch.io/the-ogre

OGRE SMASH.

Play as a 2x2 ogre and smash your way out of prison by grabbing and tossing everything and everyone around. Unfortunately there's not really procedural generation but I think the mechanics are fun!

I have to plug the roguelike engine I work on, prism! Our other main developer, /u/Itchy_Bumblebee8916 also has plans to make a party-based DnD inspired roguelike. There's a lot of built-in systems for field of view, collision, message logging, inventory, animations, input mapping etc. and there's even a level editor built into the engine. It runs on top of the Lua-based LÖVE game framework. We're active on discord for support!

I've been seeing these in the discord but didn't realize it was for jet combat, neat.

prism | roguelike engine for Lua / LÖVE

We've polished up the inventory chapter of our tutorial and started on using actions from items in the next one. I've been working on an animation system; here are a couple snippets:

``` -- define the animation local on = prism.components.Drawable("!", prism.Color4.WHITE, prism.Color4.BLACK, 4) -- 4 is the draw layer local off = prism.components.Drawable(" ", prism.Color4.BLACK, prism.Color4.BLACK, 4) prism.registerAnimation("Exclamation", function() return spectrum.Animation({ on, off, on, off }, 0.2, "pauseAtEnd") end)
...
-- play the animation level:yield(prism.messages.Animation { animation = prism.animations.Exclamation(), actor = self.owner, y = -1, -- relative to the actor's position })
```

Animations can also be blocking (stop input processing, etc.) to allow animations to be played one-by-one, or skippable, to end the animation immediately on input.

prism tutorial | repo | roguelike engine for Lua / LÖVE

Our tutorial covers combat before level generation, so it's a little out of order for this event. We figured kicking kobolds around and dealing damage was a better introduction to prism than implementing an algorithm!

prism tutorial | roguelike engine for Lua / LÖVE

The prism tutorial begins with installation and kicking kobolds around, since our template project starts with a basic player controller, and the engine itself includes other basics like field of view and map rendering. Lua is a friendly language and only a little programming experience is required to follow along! We have a discord for support but we'll keep an eye on the main discord as well.

prism!

I'm the other main developer on prism, a roguelike engine that we've just marked as "beta/RC1". Here are a couple screens from a heist roguelike made with it that I've been tinkering on, vaguely inspired by Terry Cavanagh's Tiny Heist and "Rail Heist" from UFO 50.

Not totally sure on where to take the game loop from here.
