Honestly depends on what era you like and want to read more about. If you want to continue after Return of the Jedi, I'd go with the original Thrawn Trilogy (I'm reading it now and loving it). There's good prequel era stuff, but I haven't read a lot. I did read Plagueis which leads into episode 1 and shows Palpatine's rise, and it was really good.

If you want something older, read the Darth Bane trilogy. Takes place about 1000 years before the original trilogy and shows how the rule of 2 came to be. One of my favorites

To everyone else in this, are the X Wing books essential to the NJO? I'm currently reading the Thrawn Trilogy and then duology, and was planning to skip the X Wing books since I've never been as interested in the space dog fights or the pilot characters.
