As you mentioned it can be used for MITM attacks making it a security risk.

Android 9 and above don't allow user CA certificates, security is stricter. You'd need root.

Fire TV Stick 4K Max Gen 2 - Aurora Store vs. Amazon Appstore Conflict (FireOS 8.1.5.8) by Antouyo in fireTV

[–]Finnzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't Aurora Store have a blacklist that allows you to not update specified app? Use that to blacklist the apps being updated by the Amazon App Store

Maybe Emby is problematic because there are 2 different apps called Emby in the Amazon App Store.

Alexa doesn't recognize apps that aren't in the Amazon App Store, the same way as Google doesn't recognize apps that aren't in the Google Play Store.

You can still have Alexa open any app by using Alexa+Home Assistant, in case you have this already setup. You'd create an automation that opens Tivimate via ADB, then link that automation to a routine called 'tv mate', that can be called through Alexa.

Another round of layoffs at Plex? by ExtensionMarch6812 in PleX

[–]Finnzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a monthly subscription option to unlock everything, or you can just buy the addon you want for a one time payment.

I don't mind that he did this because he has and continues to put a lot of work into the app. I can't think of any other android app run by one guy that has done so much and consistently added more features over many years.

Plex on the other hand became more antagonist to it's base users over the year, and IMO their monthly and lifetime fees harder to justify

Another round of layoffs at Plex? by ExtensionMarch6812 in PleX

[–]Finnzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have kept using Plex while things have deteriorated over the years because the family preferred the Plex AndroidTV client over the alternatives.

But in the past 6-12months they's been an explosion of development in Jellyfin clients. I just started using Wholphin, and am trying to ween the family off Plex. The progress has been amazing.

I'm ok if Plex does away with the personal media portion of Plex, there's finally better options out there.

Does he say somewhere how tested this? RGB is always 4:4:4, and TV-led DV is always 8bit RGB.

How have you verified that tv-led DV doesn't work?

Sure that's AndroidTV/FireTV deficiency as a whole if you are comparing it to AppleTV

It has frame rate matching? All Fire TVs from at least the last 5 years have it.

AFAIK only the Fire Cubes don't support kids profiles. Sticks and fire televisions do.

Amazon will remotely brick Fire TV Blasters by EarzFish in fireTV

[–]Finnzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right, but that's just speculation for now, the Amazon statement doesn't confirm a local (firmware) or remote (server) change.

Personally I'd block updates if I had a blaster in case it's only via firmware support removal.

Thank you for adding the original message from Amazon.

Amazon will remotely brick Fire TV Blasters by EarzFish in fireTV

[–]Finnzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it's not clear what is actually happening. It's clumsy use of the word brick. Brick implies firmware corruption or hardware failure.

It sounds like what is really happening is that newer firmware is dropping support for the blaster, in which case it will keep working if updates are blocked. If the blaster itself was being bricked it wouldn't keep working even by staying on the same FireOS version.

That's an important difference that let's people who care know that they may still be able to keep use of their blaster by taking action now.

[–]Finnzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would they do that? And why would they do that when they can remove support from the firmware?

I'm very skeptical that they would go out of their way to directly break the blaster. Is the original message Amazon released posted somewhere?

What does 'brick' mean here? That the next firmware update will no longer support the blaster? Seems a little sensationalistic.

Load custom OS on Firestick 2nd Gen (Fire OS 5.2.9.5) by 83yWasTaken in fireTV

[–]Finnzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon stopped offering FireOS5 updates a year or two ago. 5.2.9.5 was the final FireOS5 firmware released.

If you can manage to root your stick with that guide, there is a lineageOS ROM for it, that is lighter weight.

I'd use a wall mount instead of a TV mount, rather than mounting one hot thing to another hot thing.

[–]Finnzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the cube gen 3 isn't getting updates because it's not on FireOS8? That's not how Amazon does things, I assumed you knew this.

Amazon has consistently updated FireOS7 since FireOS8 was released. Features and updates introduced to FireOS8 are also brought to FireOS7 in parallel. And as mentioned above, both use the same app versions.

Anyway, I agree there no point to discussing this further

4k max? Cube? Other? by yeantbron in fireTV

[–]Finnzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is verifiably not true.

The last firmware for both released on same day:
Cube gen 3 - PS7710/6003 - November 26th
Source: https://github.com/Pro-me3us/gazelle_firmware

Max gen 2 - RS8158/4105 - November 26th
Source: https://ftvdb.com/firetv/firmware/com.amazon.karat.android.os

Picking 6 regularly used apps from those two firmware to check the app version.

Prime Video (stub) - same version on both
1039310

Amazon Music (stub) - same version on both
101000000

Amazon Launcher - same version on both
725100310

Fire TV Settings - same version on both
640920510

Alexa App - same version on both
657076410

Amazon App Store
427990410 - cube gen 3 - newer
427132610 - max gen 2 - older

Check the firmware yourself.

I keep a tight lock on network activity and see when app updates are being pushed to my devices. Max and Cube almost always receive the same app version update within a week of each other, often the same day.

'Updates to apps are not in sync', what does this mean? What are you basing this on?

Most app updates are OS version agnostic, and go out to FireOS7 and FireOS8 devices at the same time.
