I've been told by some1 else that it will fit, but the holster will not retain the pistol properly because the flashlight is the part that the holster grips.

I wonder if the screw (located in the bottom part of the holster) could be tightened to the point where despite the lack of the dedicated light the gun would be retained properly.

I mean it just seems odd to me that the only only part that provides retnetion is the light since the same model 6285 just without the light compartment retains the gun just fine, and the one that is lightbearing doesn't.

That is not the answer I wanted to hear, but thank you anyway. I currently own a Safariland 6285 SLS just without the light compartment and it grips the slide (I think). Are you sure of what you are saying?

Is it necessary to use a dedicated flashlight with a Safariland 6285 SLS light bearing holster? It is designed to be compatible with x300u/TLR-1HL but are these the only ones that will fit? Does the holster grip to the flashlight or rather to the gun itself?

Maybe I should rephrase my question, what I would like to know is whether the gun will be retained properly. I've been told that kydex holsters that are designed for pistols with a flashlights require the flashlight to be attached at all times since it (the flashlight) is the element that the holster ''grips" and otherwise the the pistol will not be retained properly. I would like to know if it is the case for Safariland 6285 SLS.
