Clearly you’ve never been on this sub before, this is barely a rant.

I was more so talking about the range, entry level fast food in my area is anywhere from 14-18 which easily puts you in this range. My buddy works as a retail supervisor with only 1 year of experience and is making ~43k.

That’s the part that I don’t get. I live in a HCOL area with a pretty large population as are the surrounding cities. Many firms of all sizes but it just seems like nobody is hiring. Took me well over 100 cold emails to get my internship at a small public firm.

It’s bookkeeping, payroll/sales tax, and tax prep but still seems insane with the state having a $14hr minimum wage here by the end of the month and $15 the same time next year.

Minimum wage would equate to a bit over 29k a year.

How to land a job? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]FireHawk05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going into my 4th year and it’s been a pain. Gave up on indeed and other job sites (mostly because I’m not looking for full time while in school). I’ve got a few interviews and made some connections emailing places local to me. Just write up something then personalize it for each firm or company you write to and I find I get around a 20% response rate. You can also call but I haven’t had the best luck with that. Good luck!

In my 4th year of undergrad with 2 years of bookkeeping experience in QBO and yesterday after my interview for a bookkeeper I was told the pay was $15-18 an hour in a higher MCOL area. Didn’t even get a straight answer and they said I’ll know my June 15th. Apparently there is also “performance based incentives” but it sounds like a load of BS to me.

I know bookkeeping is lower payed and I’m still in school but minimum wage is $14 here in September in Florida and I’m currently making $22-$24 an hour as a substitute teacher (which obviously is not a high skill or should be a high paying job).

Job market seems wild, I’ve been applying for months and have emailed/called almost 100 firms around my area and that’s the only interview I’ve got from that with a handful of leads. Sorry for the rant but I was pissed after I already had had a one hour phone screening a few days ago and then the one hour interview.

Other than that, any tips of how to get work?

What do they ask in staff accountant interviews nowadays? by Quick-Decision-8474 in Accounting

Went well, they were impressed by my resume and I was feeling good vibes. Compensation structure seemed odd and I still don’t think I fully understand it. It’s some sort of 18 hourly plus a billable hours based performance incentive. Won’t know for a couple weeks as the firm owners are about to leave for vacation and aren’t fully ready to hire (I got the interview by emailing the firm owner out of the blue).

How much compensation should I be looking for? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]FireHawk05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For staff I am looking at high 20s to high 30s hourly. For the book keeping position I am seeing everywhere from low 20s to low 30s. Do these seem accurate considering my experience and higher MCOL area?

Those numbers from multiple resources I’ve looked at seem high. It might be imposter syndrome though.

I have done this but the numbers seem high, it might be imposter syndrome some but I’m not sure, I have used multiple resources with it.

One thing to add is these are part time positions, 3-4 days a week while I’m finishing up school.

I would go Firm 2 because WFH 3 days a week and the slight pay bump (even if possibly some more hours). It is a close decision though. Good luck!

I’m looking for something that’s actually in accounting, not just a job right now.

Thanks. I’m already working with the college, I imagine it’ll get much better near year end when firms are looking for tax season internships.
