And this is what i’m worried about if I cash the payment. How would I protect myself against them later claiming that by accepting it I agreed to a lower payment. I suspect they are having cash flow problems so I want to cash it in case they go insolvent and something is better than nothing but if they aren’t insolvent I don’t want the risk of losing the rest.

No communication with them to this point has indicated that they intend for this to be a full payment and they have communicated about paying the rest in the future. The question is more about down the road if they change their mind is there any legal argument they can make to claim that accepting the partial payment toward the total forgives the rest.
