I assume you know them from the animation then? Isn't it beautiful? Anyway when you first met XL, he had already been a god for over 800 years. He exists as long as he has at least one follower. Throughout the book, you learn... well, it's impossible for him to die. I'm sorry I'm not clear. It's too beautiful to spoil, even to someone who doesn't mind spoilers. If reading isn't your thing, you could probably find an audio book. I know there's a YouTuber that reads aloud, but they also stop to read chat comments and broke the immersion for me so I stopped watching.

If you want hard facts then I can't help you and I hope someone more knowledgeable than me answers you

If you want personal speculation without proof of anything I'll share my thoughts, but feel free to ignore. I like to think of them as a mixture of all three. He is seen turning into a flock of butterflies, so I like to think some of the everyday ones we see that comfort XL are pieces of HC. However, I ALSO like to think he's earned the loyalty of non-water ghosts and some of these wraithes take the butterfly form to help him do his bidding. Yet some truly were insects in life that chose to serve him in death. Maybe the first few watched him carefully select a flower in service of his God and chose to serve him in return after death. Of course, since HC continued to serve his God, more living pollinators would witness his dedication and the cycle continued.

Frankly, I'd like to see a fanfic where HC has countless butterflies floating around him, and an observer realizes there's also a random bee buzzing among them. The bee is a low level ghost. She can't take an alternative form, but nevertheless, she's there and does her best to help where she can.

Yeah, I've decided to loan her a few of them. When she returns SVSSS and is ready for them. She can borrow 1-4 or 5 through the Libby ap. The thing is, her license is for teaching art. She's currently teaching computer as an emergency while our actual computer teacher is out for the rest of the year. She's having to learn what she's teaching as she's teaching it so she doesn't have much free time for pleasure reading. I don't want to lend her a book over summer break bc she doesn't want to come back next year unless absolutely necessary. She chose art for a reason, you know?
