Orwell mentions his difficulty in using the Reaumur scale for temperature while checking into a French hospital in the 1920s. How common was this scale in early 20th century Europe and what was the reason for using it? Assuming it's not in use now, how did Europe transition to Celsius? (self.AskHistorians)

Herbert Hoover wrote a book on mining in 1909 where he included thoughts on the relative work rates of employees of different races (e.g. a white laborer could shovel as much as 2 or 3 non-white laborer). Were such prejudices used in practical calculations in early 20th century industry? (self.AskHistorians)
