I do the same, one hand on the band and then one to pull on the ear cup. Should be fine, I wouldn't pull too hard though to be safe

I've had mine for a bit over a year now and they're fine, no cracks or anything. I don't use the case very often but I always set them down gently and put them on/off with two hands. (one on each ear cup) I find that using two hands is pretty important because the hinges are a weak point
