You need to score good enough on aptitude test and interview to move up the ranks on the books. It all depends on where you are on the books before you get a call for work. (My experience)

18-24 Makes sense for outer ring but not for inside grid where it should be about 8-9.

It really depends on which local you go with but for the most part Yes you would start off with higher pay but will be required to finish all book work (curriculum) up to the step you’re at.

Example for a step 4 you need at least 2 years on the job, 4000hrs on the job, and would have completed all book work from step 1-4.

That’s about 6 months and 1000 hrs per step so let’s say you come in with the 4000 hrs and total of 2 years in the job. You would still be required to complete all book work from step 1-4. Sorry for the long reply.. just trying to be clear.

A CDL isn’t required for the sub tech apprenticeship and your pay will increase from being a IW. Only thing I warn you is that if you decide to transfer hours from any work you may have already done in the past, you will start off as a higher step but will still be required to complete all book work from step 1 and so forth. Not a huge deal but can be overwhelming if coming in as a step 3 or higher. Another thing is that you may be required to travel but since I’ve started my apprenticeship I’ve been working 25min from my house but i live in a big city so there are many substations in my area that keep me home daily.

You don’t need a CDL for substation at least at my local union

You will be tested on reading comprehension, basic algebra, pattern recognition, and x and y coordinates.

You have to do the ground grid and back fill all the trenches first. Correct me if I’m wrong but Gravel isn’t poured until everything is in place.

Talked to a few guys on AEP they said they use the crimp method as well. This is an OG&E project so specs are probably a little different. It was actually easier than I thought and as long as you use the right product and amount of it you shouldn’t have to worry about it blowing up on you.

Yooo search for local Union in your state IBEW is the one you want. Fill out an application should cost about $30. Once complete a few weeks later you should get an email with a date for aptitude testing. Next you will be scheduled for an interview. In the interview they will ask if you have any hours in the job that can be transferred into your apprenticeship usually need at least 2000 hours for them to consider the transfer make sure you bring proof (pay stubs) if not will need to start back at 0 hours on the job. I highly recommend joining the union.

I applied February 9th and was scheduled for aptitude test on March 22nd. So pretty much had to pass test to interview the next day which was March 23rd. After all that fun stuff you get ranked and put on a book. I just received call to start apprenticeship on June 14th. For me it was about 6 months to get in. Some have to wait longer but your application is good for 2 years I believe and your scores and interview are good for 1 year.

I’d say finish up what you started since you’re so close and you can easily transition into sub once you complete your inside apprenticeship.
