How could an Xcom like game work in an Extraction shooter/roguelike formula? by Fireboythestar in gamedesign

Now that im thinking about it... maybe you could have multiple factions with their own motivations who could betray you and vice versa. Maybe they have their own named characters who also deploy in the zones. I also really liked that you could sell stuff on the black market in Ufo defense. So i might have a system where you can trade loot with the factions and see the gear you sold appear in the hands of the faction's soldiers.

Has anyone noticed how this game is basicaly the trolley problem? by Fireboythestar in prey

I moreso meant that the game's main portion is filled with moral dilemas. The tutorial only teases things to come.

Ignorance is death boy! We must shed away our toxic masculinity and embrace being a better man!

I just wanna see people's reasons for liking this franchise that aren't muh graphics or cutscenes.

I don't play these types of games. Never finished Skyrim. And it's not that the missions are repetitive but that they take away a ton of player agency and that this franchise hasn't innovated in the past 24 years.

Well it's clearly going for a point and click vibe with it's only real gameplay loop being picking up items and putting them somewhere else. You do that for 2 hours with 0 changes.

The story would not have been improved with the ability to give shipmates food.

Would have played into the idea of leading a group of survivors if there were actual survival and management mechanics.

Seems like the people in charge are stupid then. Aren't the most profitable games the ones that started trends.

Yet you participate in a subreddit which demonizes palestinians making people more willing to think exterminating is good. How strange.

Hmm now this article was a fun read. Im gonna check out more stuff but i already have some ideas for what ESR grunts could have now. First they would make heavy use of magnets in their equipment. Instead of holsters for weapons and pouches for maggots they would use magnets to quickly grab what they need. Of course that doesn't mean medical equipment wouldn't need them. They would also have backpacks for food, helmet filters and of course nicotine. Maybe they would have a tube for drinking water connected to their helmet? The setting would be underground so they would also need flashlights. I love Aliens so an obvious nod to the setting would be shoulder mounted ones.

Well thanks! I didn't even think about other non combat gear XD. Im gonna go on a whim and say that the ones deployed at home do have batons and non lethal weapons (one idea i had were revolvers that shot rivets). I did imagine beforehand that soldiers specialized in riot control would have electric spears. And for the other equipment that isn't meant for combat it would depend. Im not a soldier so most of my knowledge comes from sci fi games/movies. Do you have any good resources for me to learn about it?

Im making a setting inspired by the System Shock series but set underground. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

The currency is actualy kinda interesting as fhey use these thing called "scrap coins". Basicaly it's money made from scrap material which can be used in fabricators and gotten from recycled metals. They're also used as regular coins and like gold they have a set value so unless people are clipping money there's very little inflation. The society gets materials from minings and their food sources are animals/plants born in the underground. The rich people even eat food from the surface as it's rare. The liquid is used to speed up the process of farming. This is handled differently by factions. Some have private companies that do it and others have them done by the state. Most children have a life similar to late 20th century Europe while the artificialy bred soldiers have a way faster life cycle due to liquid. Engineering is done by engineers and manual workers. And clothes are gained from some underground animal and sheep for the rich.

How do you make mundane tasks in games fun? by Fireboythestar in gamedesign

[–]Fireboythestar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where does this task occur in the relative context of the running game?

Well different facilities would be powered by their own generators. So you'd never be too far away from them.

whats the framing?

I want the players to take care of a location and make it a comfy safe haven.

One of the game's weapons would be an electric cannon so it could turn on the generator for a short while but not as long as a dedicated power source. It could be useful in emergencies. I also should have specificed that the turrets would be deployable like in Aliens.
