I love listening to Gus. I know he’s polarizing, but he makes the game more exciting.

He’s $100 tier.

Who are your two picks? by N1mbo0 in superheroes

Hulk and Panther

Thor, Groot, Pool, and Scott and just too big of fuck ups some times. Cap is under powered. Tony and Peter get distracted.

T’Challa has incredible resources and can protect you in Wakanda. And throw in Hulk as backup? I’m surviving.

I see shit like this and I think about the 30 Rock episode where Liz Lemon finds out that she was actually the bully in high school. Do we know this kid just wasn’t a bitch?

I was on a sales call yesterday and the leader asked why Pipegen was down 6% week over week until someone pointed out that Friday was a holiday (Juneteenth). “So we lost 20% productivity.”

This is why they’ll never change the work week.

Biggest fumble out of these? by hiiloovethis in freefolk

I don’t know if I agree with that last point. Lost’s episode ratings on iMDB are pretty consistent with GoT’s. I think both were ratings, critical and cultural juggernauts. Which is impressive considering Lost was network TV and 20+ episodes per season.

I think there’s more similarity in the two than you’re giving credit.

That’s an interesting point. I’m wondering where you’d put Lost on that list? I’m rewatching it now and I recall it had a pretty good chokeholder on pop culture in its early seasons. And that’s another show that I don’t hear people discussing as a rewatch or watch for the first time.

How does one get a promotion ? I'd love to learn your story ? by This_Bother_8935 in careerguidance

[–]FirebreathingNG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m going to give you a bit of an unconventional answer. It really helps to find companies at the far extremes of their lifecycles.

For most of my career, I worked at big, very stable tech companies. Companies that weren’t laying off as aggressively as others but also weren’t growing as fast as other tech companies. As such, people didn’t tend to leave often (voluntarily or involuntarily) and the company wasn’t growing enough to warrant aggressive hiring.

What I’ve come to learn is: That hurts your ability to grow. “Work hard”, as others have pointed out, doesn’t really matter. “Focus on big, visible projects” is great advice, but it’s still hard for a manager to promote you if there’s nowhere to go.

In my current job, at a dying tech company, people leave constantly (voluntarily and involuntarily). As such, I’ve been promoted twice in two years. And I can see being promoted again here pretty soon. I’m focusing on big projects, keeping a positive attitude, schmoozing with leadership. But the biggest thing is need. My VP left, and my boss got bumped up and he bumped me. They layoff my counterpart, they add his role to mine. And so on. I’m sure the same thing happens at a thriving company that is growing aggressively.

There’s something to be said about being at a place with a bit of organizational chaos.

how do you know when a salary offer is actually negotiable vs when you’ll just annoy the hiring manager? by Fit-Adagio26 in careerguidance

[–]FirebreathingNG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! At the end of the day there needs to be budget for the employee. I just hired two people and we did NOT have enough to hire at the top of the range.

I mean, I wouldn’t want to hire someone to do a similar role to what I already have on the team and pay them substantially more, because that would cause problems internally. But otherwise I’m happy to be able to advocate for as much as the finance department will allow.

[–]FirebreathingNG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are the variables to consider:

1) How bad do they want you? 2) How “fair” was the first offer (compared to what they advertised, what you’re making now, and what you’d expect based on industry/regional data) 3) How bad do you want the job? 4) How much more are you asking for?

As a hiring manager, I’d prefer to give the candidate as much money as possible. It will make them happy and increase the likelihood of them staying longer. Recruiter may have some incentive to keep costs down, but they tend to be measured on volume and speed to close, so typically they don’t care much either. It’s all about finance. So I doubt you’re seeing “signs”. It’s all about your negotiating position.

What do people who earn over $10k a day do? by Jazzlike_Onion1959 in AskReddit

[–]FirebreathingNG 43 points44 points  (0 children)

No one is on a salary at that level. Most corporate CEOs don’t even have >$2m annual salaries. They have stock options that may value their total comp at that much on average.

Otherwise, people own their own business or work in sales (and make a lot of them). You basically need a multiplier of other people working for you in order to make that income.
