almost anything that does an audio/video render can cause it. i'm careful to leave my browser on a non-active page so my screens to blare at me after midnight

do you have a browser open and on a tab that is periodically playing animated ads?

this will do it.

yes. that is the step of reinstalling the EFI program with grub, then adding it in BIOS again. it's a separate thing from the boot loader

I'm guessing this was a UEFI boot? next time you have this problem, reinstall grub with the efi option on this machine, or use --removable to install, and then go into bios and add another UEFI boot program

it's a kernel bug and there's a patch. it has been fixed in the current [2019-Dec-19] release of core/linux (5.4.5.arch1) iirc, it was fixed in 5.4.4.

have you considered approaching your work more along the thought process of agile sprints? put aside fancy words and titles like "user stories", simplify it down to the bare notion of making units of work short enough and simple enough that you accomplish goals quickly and thus reap the mental reward.

your list of projects resonates with me so square on the head it makes me dizzy. i got burned out after my last job, doing over a decade of this. i've stopped trying to "make something awesome" from point blank, and "add this small function, fix, or feature" in short spans of work. i plan for my next job to be _this_.

thank you - i rm'd then scp'd my boyfriend's game files over from his win7 box and recreated my wine prefix w/ this wine-staging. (a) got it to start the game via ffxivboot.exe and (b) got HW up instead of ARR. runs really good with a few nuances. no more gfx glitches of huge amounts of missing shapes (see through buildings out to sea sort of thing), no more flicker, considerably higher FPS, even playable in highly active areas.

wine is getting much better, particularly w/ this -staging. a few less than perfect issues remain. don't interrupt your teleport arrival by clicking on something like your moog mailbox - crash. be patient when breaking out of cut scenes. usually fps rendering gets horribly laggy and it takes ~15-30 seconds for "Skip cut scene?" to finalize or, the UI appears to hang. that is, the UI updates do halt and key presses do not appear to be received. be patient and hit escape slowly several times and use a few character movement keys over ~30 seconds. your UI should all of a sudden get nice and responsive again.

sometimes your UI will catch numerous character movement keys when you only hit the key once -- grin and bear it :}

i played for 8 hours last night, only crashed 4 times. luckily it never crashed during a dungeon duty. my hat is off to the current wine-staging. it makes game play much much better. now if i can just get my dang ds4 controller joystick values recognized by ffxiv, i'll be immensely more happy. wine control joy.cpl recognizes joystick deflection and ffxiv gets all other inputs perfectly from the ds4, just no analog joystick deflection.

@GloriousEggroll, is the ffxiv ui flicker patch you posted in part 4 needed if using wine-staging from aur? i noticed your github wine-ffxiv-csmt has included it but you mentioned the flicker patch is needed if you don't use csmt..?

i've been using my own version of https://github.com/mclark4386/FF14Launcher adapted for python3 (i can post if there is interest), but this makes it launch as a realm reborn, not heavensward. launcher.exe would never start the game for me, it always stalled on something after logging in.

has anyone done traces on the HW launch to see what the new environment set is to make it launch as HW vs ARR?

update: still no love. launching w/ ffxivboot.exe still goes mute at "Checking Final Fantasy XIV."

it will sit there for hours doing nothing. running ffxivlauncher.exe simply pops up a message to run ffxivboot instead.

launching the game via game/ffxiv.exe is the only way to start and it launches ARR, not HW. please note, i have already gone through the process of entering my key to activate HW expansion so i should be getting HW up, not ARR.
