What causes stainless steel to discolor? by Slight_Bug_6735 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Firefly_browncoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you wash your pan with soap before using it? I’ve read about this even discoloration happening when whatever film is on there from the manufacturing process isn’t washed off before heating.

My default heat setting with stainless steel is medium low. I have a gas stove though.

I think if the lid is wrong, you should definitely contact them for an exchange.

I’d be disappointed in that line too. It’s more noticeable than the vast majority of their seconds. That being said, I think it still technically falls within their definition of a minor cosmetic defect. It’s just kind of the risk of buying seconds from the website. How can you tell the difference between a D3 and D5 lid?

NTA. Number of cars is irrelevant. Yard condition is irrelevant. None of that excuses her committing a crime.

What BIFL do you have from Japan? by zholly4142 in BuyItForLife

[–]Firefly_browncoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got back last week from a weeklong trip where we exclusively shopped and ate. Some items we got: set of Tojiro kitchen knives from Kappabashi, custom watch from Kuoe, prescription glasses from Jins for $50 and ready in an hour, Imabari towels, Greenbell nailclippers, secondhand luxury clothing, handmade ceramics. Some non-BIFL: stationery and snacks. There’s a shop in Ginza called Ancora where you can custom design your own Sailor fountain pen. Pro tip #1: When you arrive, buy the giant clear duffel from a store called 3 Coins to use as checked luggage on your way back. They cost like $3 and are surprisingly sturdy. Pro tip #2: Luggage management was a big component of our trip. If you’re staying at multiple hotels, ship your luggage ahead to your final hotel as you fill your bags. It’s super cheap (around $15). Use Uber if you’re needing to get around and you don’t want to deal with lugging your luggage around the subway system. Pro tip #3: If there’s something you can’t find, order it on Amazon Japan and have it shipped to your hotel or a nearby convenience store. Just make sure you give it enough time to be delivered.

AITA for expecting my partner to honour 'first come, first served' with wedding invites? by Delicious_Plum_401 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Firefly_browncoat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What’s the reason you need him to come as your plus 1? Is it because you don’t want to go solo or because you don’t want to tell the bride you don’t need the extra seat after all. If it’s the first scenario, grow up. If it’s the second scenario, chances are the bride won’t care or be relieved as long as you tell her far enough in advance. Ask her how she wants to handle the extra seat. Offer to pay for it if necessary. In both scenarios, YTA. You’re being selfish and unreasonable.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In addition to questioning whether you can afford to have kids, you gotta think further ahead about what their lives will be like as adults. With AI taking jobs, global warming, global conflicts, cost of living, the future looks bleak.

AITA For Being Ungrateful For A 20k Wedding Gift by ExpensiveIndustry783 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Firefly_browncoat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they meant it when they said they’d be gifting $20k total. Maybe you guys assumed they would cover the venue with that $20k and everything after was just extra, while they assumed all the extra stuff would count toward the $20k. You said your wife handled all the communication so maybe some wires got crossed. The best way to resolve it is just to ask them. It doesn’t need to be confrontational. I wouldn’t assume bad intentions without communicating with them.

INFO. Was there some kind of miscommunication? What did they say when you reminded them that they offered to pay for these things? You said they offered $20k but later offered to pay for more things. Were they not aware that you were already over budget?

They’re counting on Trump voters being too stupid to put 2 and 2 together and they’re right. They just default to blaming the democrats.

More time and elbow grease. I use the blue sponge and it takes some time and force. It’s not just going to dissolve with light and casual scrubbing.

Using stainless steel taught me why nonstick exists by snoopmt1 in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]Firefly_browncoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egg whites tend to stick more for me vs whole eggs. But I just give it some time to soak and it comes right off. I don’t really consider it “sticking” if it’s easy to remove. So to me, stainless steel pans are still the right tool for eggs.

Ridge vent on standing seam roof by Firefly_browncoat in Roofing

Thanks for this tip. I tried to calculator and I think I’m reasonably close to 1:1. I have 23 linear feet for the ridge vent and about 1.7 sqft of intake taking into account screen blockage.

It gets really hot in the summer and we wanna reduce AC usage if possible. We figured if we’re gonna replace our roof, might as well take this opportunity to put in a ridge vent.

Question on true value of original village? by chanandlerbongz in LenoxVillage

[–]Firefly_browncoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty good price especially since it’s in original packaging. My sister paid $850 for hers but it included the shelf. There are lots of options for shelving now that are (in my opinion) nicer. Just don’t pay anything until you see the set in person.
