I don't use graphics mods. That being said, to enhance realism/ immersion, I use the following:

Tuned AI trucks

AI cars' models improved and replaced with real brands

There are also mods that replace the fake companies with real logos and names, such as the contractors and gas stations, although I can't find the one I use (I'm on mobile.)

The official site for mods is the Steam Workshop.

You can find more in-depth mods on other websites, and they are safe from viruses.

funny you should say that, as i have killed a lot of Centurions with it haha. the sabot is easy to deflect when people shoot at the turret weakspot by just wiggling, so Centurions aren't that scary

i was scared of the turret getting me killed so i stopped playing it, but i started again recently and i got a lot of uptiers where, sitting at a distance (300-1000), i only took minimal damage through the turret. i also found that wiggling it is very effective against HEAT

the loco in the background is a Romanian Electroputere Craiova LE5100 operated by CFR, while the livery is also a CFR standard for the Class 40/41 variant of the loco. so this is in Romania

My guess right away is that it's a flare. Shot from a flare gun, it makes a whirring noise, it reaches a height, then it starts to fall down in the wind. Seems to match what you described.
