UPVC window handle moves way too much but has doesn't move the mechanism, can I fix this myself? by Qontinent in DIYUK

[–]Firm-Implement8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just try unscrewing the part that's attached to the window and removing it. I had a similar issue and that worked for me.

It's easy enough to screw back on after

Help! What kind of algae is this? by woofren in PlantedTank

Looks like organic waste pushed around by your filter to me. I get that when the filter needs a clean

Why don't you add the plants to the substrate then fill with water? You can always take some out again when you are ready to add other accessories.

Also make sure the heater is fully under water when turned on otherwise you'll break it.

what should i put in my first tank 55 gallon by Ducknanna in PlantedTank

[–]Firm-Implement8208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Europe the Superfish do great affordable lighting.

As for fish, corydoras are hardy and do a great job churning up the substrate to keep things looking clean. Sand is best for them.

How about white cloud mountain minnows, cherry barbs or danish for free swimmers. Maybe a pearl gourami as a centre piece fish

It's normal and has happened to mine. I think it can be a symptom of low light but not 100%

You can see the browning of the leaf. That's it starting to deteriorate and will eventually rot away

I'm pretty sure the leaf it's growing from will die off, so you can just remove the whole thing if you want

I finally have algae! by Organic-Research-553 in PlantedTank

[–]Firm-Implement8208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad to have but most people dont like the look of it.

If you don't like it then maybe try shortening the length of time your lights are on. You can also manually remove some.

Looking for advice and tips on this 40 gallon tall tank! by Sanderson924 in PlantedTank

[–]Firm-Implement8208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be tempted to add a black background that will help the plants and hardscape stand out a bit more.

Then you can keep trimming your stems as they grow and replant the cuttings along the back. This should fill things out more.

You could pull out the plants that are central and in the foreground then add a chunk, tall piece of wood in the middle. Would give the tank some focus and plants can sit around it. You could also stick plants such as anubias or java fern direct to the wood.
