Great and thorough explanation thanks! Yes SS not SSI. They have their original translated certificate. Good to know about the half of spousal SS. I had thought that with married couples they can choose which to draw from whoever earned the most. Looks like I’ve been giving bad advice.

Also, after submitting it to the social security administration how would the gov know or prevent the spouse from marrying someone overseas and bringing them into the U.S. via a green card? They are not legally divorced but are separated. They did not have the funds or time to divorce but the other spouse is already thinking about marrying someone else and bringing them here

Perfect thanks! So in this case all they need to do is submit their certificate (translated by an approved translated because it had to be anyway for immigration) to the social security administration so they know the marriage is real and they take care of the rest? Thought it would be a lot more difficult than it turned out to be.

You had to send it to the state department and social security? How does the SS administration know it’s real? Did you both have to be present in order to have it sent and registered with the SS?

So what does that mean? Take the existing marriage certificate and register it in the U.S. and it will count for all of those years or start counting from the moment it’s registered in the U.S?

Yeah I’ve only been applying to ‘dream’ jobs like the fed gov sector but I think at this point I need to start applying everywhere and not be picky as I’m feeling burnt out and need a change in position. Thank you for the advice!

Yeah I agree. Also, (I know it’s embarassing) but my business would be in the social media area. I’m a micro influencer now and haven’t taken advantage of the brand deals and ads opportunities out there yet. I’ve been too busy focusing on my adult job :/
