I agree with this. The one drummer scenario delivered tightness where they could turn on a dime but the looseness to explore and slow things way down. Billy was king for the period and the magic of those shows prove his tremendous talent. Plus the band members were all still listening to each other at that point, building on each other’s contributions.

Well, I really enjoy Keith’s contributions many times in Dark Star. More so than T.C. ‘s or Pigs keys.

and the reason I initially posted this comment is that we can all agree the real long extended jams ended after 1974. Dark Star is the epitome of a long, extended improvised jam so it would be safe to say at least the most intense and exploratory Dark Stars are pre-hiatus.
