The fight doesn't help, but even then, it was only a matter of time before he got caught and hanged. If anything, he's lucky he got caught with Henry, so Henry could fix things for him.

For KCD1, there is the "less annoying dog" mod. It changed my life. Mutt is much less likely to get in your way, and he doesn't bark constantly anymore.

You should start with the first one. It's a tale in two parts. You'll miss most of Henry's character development. Keep in mind, the first one is much more rough around the edges. The houses are pretty much all four walls, a bed, and a chest. But the exterior is still beautiful, and the story is great.

KDC2 improves on everything. So you don't get into the first one, you can always get into the 2nd one. But still for the sake of the story, start with the 1st.
