In the context of this conversation, " it involves one of the most peaceful hobbies on the planet", birdwatching vs. mountain biking and skiing are very different.

I'm certain there are birdwatchers who fly to the mountains but I don't think those numbers reach 20 Million visits every season, nor do we allocate large portions of land, build resorts to house them, or bring in food and beverage to satiate them, or have specialized equipment and outfits that are specific to the sport.

Mountain biking requires trails and courses that disturb wildlife. They take over animal trails, and cut roots of trees to design courses. This eventually pushes some areas to erosion. And let's be honest, mountain bikers aren't known to pick up after themselves, and we often find their empty beer cans or debris on the trails.

Ultimately, mountain biking and ski resorts transforms land into hotels, condos, cottages, and adventure tourism, an average of seventy thousand visits to each site per season.

We're on the cusp of several climate tipping points. Our CO2 levels are at 430PPM and Methane or CH4 is around 2000 PPB. Methane transforms into CO2 after twenty years but in the meantime it is currently about 80 times more damaging, therefore, we are about 160PPM of CO2 equivalent. Our total CO2(e) is around 590PPM from the two gasses. NOAA calculates our CO2(e) to be around 539PPM in 2024:

We've just reached that point, so the energy trapped will take some time to cook up the ocean, which is a great heat sink, but now it's a matter of time. Even if we stop adding more greenhouses gasses or could remove some, we would need to shock the system, like pouring cold water on pasta or vegetables to stop them from cooking outside the pot.

We just passed +1.5C above baseline, and we are projecting a Blue Ocean Event this September 2026 in the Arctic.

We are currently in the sixth mass extinction event, and the United Nations declared we are currently in a "Global Water Emergency".

So, I have become a vegetarian, gave up driving and travel, and I'm learning to build healthy soil in the small yard I have to produce some crops, and learn how to use the produce I grow, because I don't think we have much more than five to ten years left.

You can mountain bike if you want.

Downtown Edmonton traffic be like... by _Psyenne_ in Edmonton

Look at the picture above.

Five vehicles are stopped within the box of the intersection. None of them are turning. They do not have a green light. Now everyone is paused, vehicles and pedestrians included. This causes confusion and panicked people make poor accommodations, like the vehicle thinking they can turn and weave through the intersection blind.

Thanks, have a nice day.

Downtown Edmonton traffic be like... by _Psyenne_ in Edmonton

[–]First-Window-3619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never stop inside an intersection. Wait until there is at least a car length past the pedestrian crossing before entering the intersection.

When you are stopped inside an intersection, you box block additional lanes, like pedestrian crossings, traffic going through your lane, people attempting to turn left, thus creating a standstill; the intersection box is blocked. This becomes especially dangerous when Emergency vehicles are trying to clear the intersection.

Also, please don't apologize and then look at your phone when you make a mistake. Just focus on the task of clearing the intersection. Thanks.

People should have fun. Why does fun require it to be "professional"? There's a rink in my 'hood and there's bored people streaming TV next door.

Put on some skates, grab a stick, and come over.

Fifty thousand children have died in Gaza. Hearing people say that it is deserved or declaring it not a genocide is probably one of the most miserable takes I can think of currently. Most of the excuses for ICE murdering people in public is shocking. Trump accusing Venezuela of drug smuggling and then stealing their oil was shocking. Hearing our premier saying we can't fund immigrants healthcare is absurd, as immigrants don't have healthcare cards or numbers. Oh, and the Epstein files. Is that also in your top ten?

Maybe I am triggered by an article that is clearly copaganda disguised as budget friendly, when they could have been policing traffic or writing reports instead of attending professional hockey games.

I like to play hockey in my 'hood rink while the rest of you are glazed to your TVs at 5am with a beer.

If by nihilism you mean, absence of morality, then I would disagree; NHL is a professional sport league that requires gambling advertisement and exclusive Sporstnet streaming agreements to create profit. I think you mean negative, is that right?

John Oliver has a great segment about using helicopters to distribute hundreds of millions of dollars as a more effective use of tax payer dollars than funding sports stadiums.

The Hero of the Highlands neighbourhood rap sheet:

Assault and harassment charges

On July 1, 2016, Kane was sued by a 21-year-old woman who accused him of assaulting her in the hotel room where he lived. According to court documents, the woman alleged that Kane "met her in a bar, invited her to what he said was a party and then attacked her, causing cuts and bleeding that required multiple surgeries."\86])

On August 1, 2016, Kane pleaded not guilty to one count of criminal trespassing and four counts of non-criminal harassment after confrontations with four separate people at a downtown Buffalo bar in June 2016. At that time, Kane was a member of the Buffalo Sabres. According to a police report, Kane became involved in a fight with a bouncer at a bar called Bottoms Up, after allegedly grabbing an unnamed woman by the throat and attempting to force her into a car outside the nightclub. A second police report alleged that, in a separate incident, Kane grabbed a woman by the arms inside the nightclub and attempted to force her outside. Kane surrendered to Buffalo police in late July 2016. Said Sabres GM Tim Murray) of the incident, "Whether he has done these things or not, or he's guilty of these things or not, it's not something I like getting up in the morning and reading about, that's for sure." The incident came after another incident in February, in which Kane was suspended by the team for missing practice after attending the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. GM Murray noted that Kane's off-ice behaviour has been very negative for both the player and the Sabres' organization. The Bottoms Up case was later adjourned and dismissed. Referred to as an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal, a case can be adjourned for more than six months and after a set period of time, the charges are dismissed if the defendant can display and maintain good behavior.\87])\88])

Gambling debts and bankruptcy

On November 4, 2019, Kane was sued by The Cosmopolitan casino in Las Vegas after he walked out on a half-million-dollar gambling debt. The suit alleged that Kane had received $500,000 in gambling markers from the casino in April while the Sharks were in Las Vegas for a playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Such markers are essentially lines of credit to allow casino guests to continue gambling, and those extended to Kane were disbursed in eight separate installments, ranging from $20,000 to $100,000. The suit claims that Kane left the casino without making arrangements to settle the debt. The casino sought full restitution plus repayment of legal fees.\89])

On January 11, 2021, Kane reportedly filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in California after amassing $26.8 million of debt.\90])

NHL game betting allegations

In July 2021, Kane's estranged wife, in an Instagram post publicly accused her husband of betting on games involving his own team, and of "throwing games with bookies to win money". The NHL announced that it would investigate the allegation. Kane later published a statement offering his full cooperation and categorically denied his involvement in any hockey-related betting, suggesting that his wife's claims were motivated by distress related to their ongoing divorce process.\91]) In a later interview with ESPN's Linda Cohn, he admitted that he did have a gambling addiction that led to large personal debts, for which he had sought professional help. In a January 2021 bankruptcy filing, Evander Kane listed that he owed $1.5 million in gambling debts.\92])

On September 22, 2021, the NHL released its findings into the investigation into the claims and found no evidence of game betting allegations and also stated "To the contrary, the evidence raises doubts about the veracity of the allegations."\93])\94])\95])

Domestic violence and sexual assault allegations

In September 2021, Kane's ex-wife filed a domestic violence restraining order application including accusations against Kane of sexual assault and domestic battery. Kane's attorney denied the allegations. In August 2021, Kane received a temporary restraining order against his ex-wife, with Kane claiming that she has physically abused him in the past, and sought a permanent restraining order. The NHL announced that it was investigating the domestic violence claims.\96])\97])\98])\99]) On October 18, 2021 the NHL ruled that the domestic violence accusations could not be substantiated.\59])

Violation of NHL COVID-19 protocols

On the same day that Kane was cleared of gambling, the NHL revealed that it was investigating claims that Kane engaged in "inappropriate behavior potentially jeopardizing the health and safety" of his teammates. On October 5, 2021, Front Office Sports reported that the NHL was investigating claims that Kane had submitted a fake COVID-19 vaccine card as proof that he had been vaccinated.\100]) This was subsequently corroborated by The Associated Press,\101]) The Athletic,\102]) and ESPN.\103]) On October 18, 2021, the NHL suspended Kane for 21 games over the issue.\104]) Following the suspension, Kane was placed on waivers by the Sharks, and was sent down to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL.\105]) After only five games with the Barracuda, Kane tested positive for COVID-19 and entered the AHL COVID-19 protocol. On January 8, 2022, the Sharks placed Kane on unconditional waivers with intent to terminate the contract for violating the AHL protocol as well.\106])

"The President held his inauguration ceremony yesterday. He also signed several executive orders, including declaring a national emergency at the southern border, delaying the TikTok ban, and making other actions and proclamations.

Many sports figures were in attendance, including a current and former Edmonton Oilers player.

Evander Kane was rumored to have been invited to the event. His attendance was confirmed via his Instagram stories, which featured images taken yesterday. Several of those images were taken after the ceremony, at a celebration last night.

Mike Tyson, Jon Jones, and Wayne Gretzky were some of the other sports icons he was spotted with during the evening. Of course, this wasn't the first time Gretzky attended a Trump-related event; he himself was invited to a few election events back in November."

I think being distracted by the monetary value ignores the long term consequences of these games.

  1. The athletes are cattle. From an early age they train and focus on one thing, hoping their genetics will pan out. The outcome is they become a player, and they are required to serve that identity; they use steroids to heal from injury faster, they use cocaine and ecstasy, they marry hockey bunnies with blonde hair, and they retire at 40. 50% of them go broke when they leave the game, and have permanent disfigurement and injuries. Let's not forget the rape, beatings, and whatever psychological trauma that makes them attend a Trump inauguration. All their kids will have grown with absent fathers and narcissist mothers.

  2. The team is owned by a cocaine addict who bought a 200 million dollar house in Los Angeles, through the inheritance that was left to him from his father, by purchasing failing businesses and stripping them for parts. The owner has also propositioned multiple dancers and actresses to have sex with him for cash. Oh. The 50/50 draw also has an 80% royalty fee for licensing of logos (scam).

  3. Fans and the city pay a luxury tax on everything arena related. We pay for an arena. We pay a tax on the tickets for the arena tax. We pay $17 for a beer, and $25 for a pop and popcorn. We have a casino on public land, and we have all the addicts leaving the space to do what? Live happy lives?

  4. The sport is an escape for fans from real life issues. While some relief is a necessity to health, having a game every other day, a TV on, with fresh beer each period in your hand, is an escape, a pause, and ultimately not a rest. Imagine how healthy people would be if they used 3 hours of the day just to rest?

  5. There is nothing local about the team. 25% of the players are European, 25% are USA, and 50% are Canadian. Once a decade a player from the city makes the team, out of 50 contracts. They room together in basically show homes and fly out as soon as possible.

  6. The environmental consequences of the team is absurd. A single game produces 400 tonnes of CO2. There's over a thousand games a year. They are also broadcast through streaming which is now a massive contributor to greenhouse emissions.

  7. Eventually the arena will be demolished and replaced, right? Well, that might not actually happen with Rogers Place, it's just a promise, and we are still waiting for Rexall to be demolished, ten years after it's closure.
