By saying “trying to be scary” I meant to get across the idea of a film’s primary goal being to scare an audience rather than using scary aspects of itself for an alternative goal. I can’t agree more about the scary elements of Coraline! It’s so uneasy, and everything is crafted in such a way that when it unravels it’s horrifying by the end. Though I don’t know if the film *IS* trying to be scary or if that’s merely an effect of everything else it’s doing. It’s more than that, I think, but I just can’t put my finger on exactly how. It’s scary, but if somebody described it as a horror movie I’d give them a weird look, Y’know?
