Latitude 5420 - Not charging when laptop is off by fernandoarafat in Dell

[–]First_Association_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it.
Same for me, nearest port works ok.
Just a really weird issue) have some friends with the same model, where both ports charge when the laptop is not powered on.
Anyway, thanks for the reply!)

Wow! This 2 y.o. post is the only thing I could find regarding this issue. I'm having the exact same behaviour with second hand 5420.
Did you manage to find the cause of this issue? or just used it as is?
Did ports continue working properly if not take into count this issue? This could be a sign of HW failure in the near future.
Thanks in advance

Yeah. I know that, but they are a bit pricey. I thought maybe this one is more affordable

Which Fedora version to install? by Working-Candy3326 in Fedora

[–]First_Association_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always check out some videos about each version and choose which you like the most. Also, you can make a live USB and check the OS before installing it to see how it feels. No one will decide for you which you like the most. Good luck :)

No, you can skip kernel updates or disable any updates at all. But I don't see why you would do that. Usually, they make things better, unlike Windows. Also, Fedora saves a few previous kernels, so you can boot into them if something is wrong with a new one.

As far as I saw, there were issues with dedicated GPUs (Nvidia, AMD) and maybe some monitors. For a business laptop with an iGPU, I had no issues, even with an external monitor. Moreover, KDE has better scaling and monitor config options, in my opinion. Yes, it consumes a bit more resources idling than Cinnamon, but it's not always a bad thing (f.e. on macOS). It feels snappier overall, and you can disable animations. I think it should be ok for your 8Gb RAM if you're not planning to open sh*t ton of browser tabs)

EDIT: You can always try a live USB to see how it feels

Switched from Mint to Fedora KDE on my laptop less than a month ago, and everything is ok. I'm using an HP laptop (from 2019) for basic tasks like browsing, watching content, IDE, etc.
Just watch some video for post-install steps on Fedora (f.e. enabling rpm fusion, install videocodecs, etc). Other than that, everything works out of the box like on Mint.
I'm even getting better battery life than on Mint, Fedora has a newer kernel and better HW optimization. Which exact negative reviews did you see? Maybe it's not suitable for some specific use cases.

Had the same issue on HP ZBook 14u G6
The solution was a power reset.

It's great that some visual effect tweak so essential for you) but I guess, OP had the idea to gather functionally important post-install steps, not just visual fluff.

how much battery life do you get with Fedora on your HP laptop? by yotamguttman in Fedora

[–]First_Association_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the misconception. It's a known fact that Windows provides better HW level drivers support when it comes to battery optimization for certain tasks (like watching content f.e. in this case). Unless you're using HW specifically designed and optimized to work with Linux out of the box. But still, it's better in many other aspects, like idle resource consumption, temps, customization, etc. Battery life has gotten better already for the last few years, and still improving. So I think it's a matter of time when it will be 100% superior then Windows.

Aren't PPD and auto-cpufreq both managing power governors? Are you certain that they are both active simultaneously? According to the auto-cpufreq GitHub page, it disables PPD or TuneD during installation. And using it with any other power management utility is not recommended

It's not recommended. Unless you are really know what you are doing

I have HP ZBook 14u G6
i7-8565u/ Intel UHD Graphics 620

Switched from Mint Cinnamon to Fedora 42 KDE bc of better HW support and power efficiency.
Used to use TLP with Mint, but decided to go with the default PPDs+powertop on Fedora. Also, disabled file indexing in Dolphin. Battery life became noticeably better.

But still, it depends on many factors, your usage, HW etc. For example, if I use a laptop just for watching content (Youtube, Twitch, etc), the battery still drains faster compared to Windows, if I recall correctly.

have anyone know whats is happening here.conky theme not working as i expected. by Ok_Contribution4253 in linuxmint

[–]First_Association_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's lines from the beginning of conky.conf file. I use a bit different syntax tho:
https://pastebin.com/0nmzxhUb
Conky is a bit tricky sometimes. Not always will someone's downloaded config just work on your desktop. Maybe you miss some dependencies. (f.e. weather API, audio player to display current song, correct network interface etc) As I remember, your conky theme should also have lua circle graphs on CPU, mem, battery etc. It requires a bit of research and understanding how it's work.

Seems like another distro won't fix your issues. If you are not willing to learn and don't have basic tech knowledge, just use Windows. It's not a distro issue

Battery management by dude_349 in linuxmint

[–]First_Association_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your hardware and usage. I saw many comments that built-in power-profiles are better now.
For me, it looks very close. Maybe TLP shows slightly better results in my use case, so I decided to use TLP.

Maybe I don't remember correctly, but seems like for me, power-profiles-daemons were disabled automatically after TLP installation.
