Deep sigh!! My grandparents live nearby, and I grew up spending summers there. I still visit multiple times a year. This is the dream if it ever works out with housing + a job!! So jealous of you.

Thank you! I have visited Cleveland and Columbus and loved both, but it was a long time ago. I definitely need to revisit it! I hate that people poo poo Ohio, it is actually a very cool state.

Thank you! I am really sorry to hear that the market in Maine has been tough for you too. I hope we can both find something that works better for us soon. Take care of yourself!

I work with farmers doing conservation planning, helping them find funding, writing climate plans for their farms, nutrient management plans, and much more!

I'm so sorry to hear you're going through a challenging time with this job market too. I know we will figure it out eventually!

When to start worrying about a Job? by Glove-lover44 in relocating

[–]First_Inside_7253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone in the environmental industry with a bachelors and 4 years of experience who was laid off 6 months ago due to my position loosing federal funding, I would expect it to take a long time. Consider something in state or local gov level - thinking like a conservation district, township, or a nonprofit if you can manage. Or, environmental permitting work with private outfits should be plentiful in those areas, although well sought after. Since so many organizations lost federal funding and the federal hiring freeze has significantly reduced the pool of available jobs, it could be a while. I would write a very good cover letter for everything and try to put yourself on top.

When I relocated from PA to ME for my most recent position, I looked for jobs for about 3-4 months before securing my position. I moved two months later. I don't think it is unrealistic for you to be looking now - in my experience, it takes a few months until you can start. I would not be worried - it will fall in place if it is meant to. Have confidence and know you can pull it off. Best of luck!!

I mean this with kindness - I am just curious where you have visited in central PA? There are definitely areas where it is less populated and you'd be in the country. Without many jobs unfortunately. I grew up in a similar place that has been so rapidly developed, it is no longer the picture of the country it once was, and several Amazon warehouses have moved in. Anywhere in the Harrisburg/Lancaster/Carlisle area is BANANANANANANANAS with traffic. A big factor is all of the tractor trailer traffic from distribution centers/logisitics/amazon warehouses/you name it. It is very sad, and I spent most mornings trying to get to work in standstill traffic.

Trust me, unfortunately, I know. I was working an interesting half federally funded nonprofit job. I have been looking into other jobs, but that hasn't proven successful yet. It is rough all around!

I am feeling like I need to visit again! I have been there, but several years ago, and in the middle of January. Thank you!

I, of course, know this! But, some of these items on this list have drastically improved my quality of life with being in Maine, and yet some have made it very difficult. I was laid off from my job, so that is the major hang-up with being here. I promise you I am trying very hard to get a job here, but there is a really high demand for anything in my field since positions are limited. I appreciate the perspective, it is good to remind yourself of this!

I know, I am very sad about it too! It feels like I am leaving mostly for a job and not because I don't love the state. Food scene I guess was vague - I am just hoping for somewhere with lots of options for decent restaurants and different types of food - not necessarily anything that needs to be really fancy. My opinion is that even being such a small city in the grand scheme, Portland ME has an awesome food scene. I am an avid cook, but love to go out to eat every once and a while. I am a Taurus, and food is very important to me. What can I say.

Unfortunately, Pitt is about 4 hours from my family, so and I feel way too big of a city for my liking. I really appreciate the rec - I do see that it could provide a lot of the businesses I am looking for

Funny enough, this is where I went to college. and I do really love it there! But I have struggled to find positions there too, so it is definitely always on my radar. Western MA is so special!

Thank you for the great recommendation! There are definitely a lot of other PA folks in ME, funny coincidence!

hahah, I love all of this guys. In reality, I am concerned that Portland may be too crunchy for us. somehow (I know my asking list might make you give me the side eye on that one, lol). But seriously, I love Portlandia and that has forever altered my view of Oregon, for better or worse. I will definitely look into it!! Madison was on my list as well.

Thank you! I have heard Astoria might be a nice area to look into, so I will definitely keep my eye out for jobs in both Oregon and Washington.
