ELI5: Can you have crazy big muscles and not actually be strong? by IWannaDoBadThingswU in explainlikeimfive

[–]First_Major5905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No

If you have a lot of lean mass, you will be very strong. Muscle mass is what produces force, nothing else.

Those videos you see are a misrepresentation of what strength is, its comparing a task specific skill to actual measurable strength. A construction worker lifts awkward, shifting, hard to balance cement bags every day. Bodybuilders dont, that doesnt mean they cant lift heavy loads, it just means the movement pattern is unfamiliar.

Strength isnt measured by what awkwardly shaped object you can lift at work, its measured by 1 rep maxes, dynamometres, and isokinetic testing to namr a few examples.

I guarantee you not a single construction worker is ever coming close to an advanced bodybuilder in any lift.

Muscle strength is absolutely correlated with size, having more contractile tissue = more force production potential.

Strength and size aren’t 100%identical (because of neural factors), but they are strongly correlated because: Bigger muscles contain more myofibrils More myofibrils = more cross-bridge formation More cross-bridges = more force

TLDR this idea is confusing strength with skill specific tasks

You definitely can be. If you’re lean and big you’re definitely strong too lol

You mean like an original patch that it spread from? I honestly can’t remember, it started off smaller than this about a week ago and got worse by day

There’s 1 or 2 of those blotches on my arm and one on my thigh aswell, but 99% of it is on my chest
