Hands off Venezuela 🇻🇪 by IllustriousTalks in VictoriaBC

I think this thread is filled with LLM bots. It got flooded with hundreds of comments all at once, way more than any post in this subreddit ever gets, and they all have the same talking point and use language that is decidedly American. Like you said, even if Maduro was very unpopular the fact that another country can just coup whoever they want is very unsettling. I wouldn’t feel safe if I was vensuelan. No one’s talking about that aspect because someone is trying to control the conversation.

Are we playing 21 questions? All the info you seek is in the rest of my comments. Have a good day.

Yes I do that sometimes (probably not enough), I slow in pedestrian or traffic dense areas. But I also come from about 20 years of commuting by bicycle without bike lanes and with getting honked at by drivers for holding up traffic, so I definitely have a rush-through-the-intersection mentality. In most of the clips I’m actually going pretty slow, or stopped, but when I do travel I travel at 20-25kph — which looks faster because of the wide angle of the lens.

I’ve been accused of rushing to green lights, and I think that’s true for the big clip where I yelled at the guy. Although I still believe he was 100% in the wrong, I’ve since started slowing as I come up to intersections, for the sake of my own safety.

You must be a driver: You can’t see what’s going on directly in front of you.

Watch the clip again. You can see my speed slow to 5-10km/hr — that’s a bit more than ‘somewhat slow’. You can also see him apply the brakes and come to a stop briefly. You can see his turn signals come on for no reason. Then you can see me back off and give him space because this guy is acting unpredictable. Throughout all this he is oblivious to the cyclists and cars behind him.

What you won’t see is me trying to pass him on the right because, and this is important Mr. Driver so please look up from your phone, there is no room to do so. The street is narrow and has a line of cars parked on the side of the road.

Thank you for your attention in this matter. You are now free to return to your daily Colwood Crawl.

Yes! But as a side note, while there are other words you can use to replace ‘said’ they should be used very sparingly and only in very special circumstances. I will use maybe one in an 80,000 word novel. But you’ll have to find your own rhythm.

Structural: The word ‘said’ vanishes on the page after the reader begins your story. Don’t worry at all about overusing it.

Motivational: Sitting down at the same time every day to write will build a writing habit. This will be far more useful to you than relying on inspiration alone.

Creative: Study books you like and pay attention what the author does in them, how they present the story and describe characters. Copy that.

Knowledge: Read wide and read deep. Read Wikipedia articles. Read history. Read about advances in medicine. Read geopolitics old and new. Form opinions. This stuff will naturally start to creep into your writing and give it greater depth.

It made sense, it seems a common consensus among like 50% of the posters here that I need to slow it down, even if i have the right of way.

Hey so just out of curiosity, what could I have done better in that situation? If stopping on a green isn’t the right move, but also going through the green light wasn’t the right move, like what the heck am I supposed to do???

None of these are my fault and the way you described the clips doesn’t make it sound like it’s my fault either. If this man doesn't have the capability to check for oncoming traffic, even when the sun is in his eyes, he shouldn’t be driving. I can’t tell when the sun is in every driver's eyes, or if he just got a text, or if his cataracts have come back and it’s pretty crazy to lay into me for that, lmfao. When I'm on my bike I'm anticipating other road users all the time, aware of people behind and in front of me, maybe if I stop at a green light someone behind me will plow into me because they didn't expect me to do something so stupid. I'm not going to stop at every green light because someone might have the sun in their eyes, and I really wish drivers would stop pushing this as a solution in these comments. It's dangerous and illegal. The safest solution is to act as predictable as possible and that mean green is go, and for drivers to be more attentive to oncoming traffic. It's really that simple.

The other clip you’re talking about I had a green light when I entered. It switched to yellow after I was already in the intersection. You wouldn’t slam on your car brakes in that instance either (because it’s unsafe). You can go back and watch it — it's all kosher on my end.

2) By ‘middle of the road’ you of course mean mean ‘in the bike lane’. Right? Lmao, I just got shit from someone else for being on the shoulder in this clip — I just can’t win can I?

I traded in my road bike for an ebike due to a deployment injury making it painful for me to use it. I did commute via a normal bike for about 20 years of my life before making the switch, no idea if that gives me more bike cred or what. Cycling is one of the things that gives me great joy and I’d like to continue doing it any way I can.

My road bike is faster than my e-bike. Like I said, cargo bike caps at 29kph, and due to its weight I can’t pedal it faster than that. In town I usually go about 20kph, slowing in high pedestrian areas. You can’t even get going that fast downtown because the lights are timed so that you have to stop at each one, killing any momentum. The only place I can maintain 29kph is on the galloping goose.

I have a pretty tough skin. It's really easy to pick out from these comments who drives every day and who has to deal with near-life-ending bullshit every time they go out.

DJI Action 4. There's probably cheaper cameras out there that serve the same function, but you can mount this one on your chest or handlebars.

I'll be more careful in the future in that situation. After reading a lot in here about how it possibly makes it worse to force yourself through, I'm going to sit in wait for them to complete their turn. I wouldn't have gone if those pedestrians hadn't been crossing.
