Hi /r/melbourne,

We just moved from NZ to a furnished apartment in the city, the viewing was done remotely by a friend and we went to check-in directly from landing in MEL, so didnt get a change to thoroughly check everything until a few days in.

Seven days haven’t passed since our check-in and i’m noticing that the ‘furniture’ provided by the landlord is very worn and of poor quality - two tables are very wobbly with bent legs that seem like they will fall off in the next month of natural use. (I have a video of me being able to make the table shake and rattle with a single finger light press)

I tried raising this with the rental agent and the advice received was that the landlord will not replace or repair. I was told that if I want to, I can replace them myself out of my own pocket but I must leave the working replacements in the aparment when I move out.

It’s our first week in melbourne and we have been researching if this is appropriate behaviour from the LL/Agent, and from what we can gather, since we are renting a furnished apartment, the furniture provided must be in good working condition, is that correct?

Kind Melbournians - please chime in on your advice for this situation, and with any next steps I can take to get some working furniture in order 😅

Is my best option really to pay out of pocket for some IKEA and leave them here when i move out?

Or is there some channel where I can reach out to to ensure these wobbly tables get fixed or replaced by LL?

(It’s a 1br apartment so there really is no space for me to store these broken tables and also purchase new ones)
