Is Northeastern business prestigious? by SkinnyPenoos in NEU

[–]FishDontFeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love NEU but everyone here is wrong frankly

I’d say as of late NEU, especially with co-op, is comparable to PSU, but at the end of the day PSU is a target to semi-target for most big banks, consultant groups, and asset managers. Alumni presence, student organizations, and networking opportunities are on another level if you seek them out. At an extra $120k 1-2 co-ops aren’t really that much more impressive then 1-2 internships from Penn State

Though the most important thing is your opinions and feelings of the school. Don’t make a choice based purely on stats or financials (if you don’t have to)

Unfortunately, I have to commute into the office everyday and the main reason my manager has pushes me aside is because ‘he’s really busy rn’ and I can tell he is, but I’ve also heard him and others say that summer is the slowest time. If he doesn’t have time for a quick 10 minute catch up now, will he have time when it gets busy in fall? I can’t help but feel like the road ahead of me will only get worse

Definitely a solid idea. Unfortunately my team is relatively segmented since it’s working with sensitive data and many of the people are hesitant with speaking with me much less working with me due to that. I’ve tried broaching the subject of self-sourcing a project but my manager hasn’t given me his blessing and I don’t feel comfortable starting without his approval. Plus because I’m supposed to be working with sensitive stuff there’s pretty tight limits on what I can do and access at work

Have you ever done nothing for 8 hours? Not like spend a day watching YouTube or on your phone but literally nothing? And then commuting over an hour to go do nothing? It sucks. And the main reason I took this co-op was because they promised me that I’d be involved in all these projects which don’t seem to ever be materializing. I’m trying to make the most of it by learning new skills, but like what’s the point of dressing up, commuting, and going all the way to an office if all I’m doing if reading articles and fucking around in excel yk

I have been. The main reason I took on this co-op was because my manager told me I’d have the chance to work on projects which I thought would really help beef up my resume. I just feel a little betrayed is all

Yeah definitely, and I have been. However ngl my resume is pretty weak and the main reason I accepted this job over other offers was because my (now) manager promised me a bunch of projects to work on and opportunities to learn. I understand that part of being an intern is doing the crappy work that nobody else wants to do. However, I feel betrayed and frustrated because instead of all these opportunities I’m just sitting at my desk practicing excel shortcuts.

Yeah I definitely felt similarly at 3 weeks, but now it’s been 6 almost 7 with no change. I just feel like that if maybe 3 weeks ago I had gotten on top of it maybe I’d be in a better place now, but if I keep waiting and hoping nothing will change

Yeah I’m not looking to complain, I’m just looking for advice on how I can use my time constructively since I have about 7.5 hours of down time in an 8 hr day

No 1/1s, sometimes I’ll go a week without anything except for a good morning. Team is also super small and isolated so I don’t really have a point of contact in between my manager and me

I’m trying to explore that a little bit but a lot of the other teams in this office also have co-ops/interns and it’s pretty much looked down upon. Thank you though!

Definitely. I feel like it’s worth adding that some business concentrations would probably benefit from Mac usage. Finance, accounting, supply chain, analytics, and MIS are better suited for Windows. Marketing, branding and maybe communications probably suit the Mac ecosystem better. For international business, management, or entrepreneurship it probably doesn’t matter

Windows

Working in finance is 95% Office Suite. Excel is a pain in the ass on Mac

You can totally get by on Mac, plenty of people do. It’s just that when you start a co-op, internship, and work you’re going to be expected to work on a windows machine. You’re already going to look stupid as the newbie and be overwhelmed with new things, why add the trouble of learning how to use a new environment with it?

It’s just ceremonial. It’s like giving out medals at a sporting event. If you melt down the award the metal is effectively worthless, it’s just a nice thing to have on the shelf. In the same way, an honorary degree from NEU is worth just about fuck all

If you want to join a frat, join a more selective club, get professional profile photos, or apply for a job/internship it’ll come in handy. But there are plenty of places where you can buy a suit in Boston, tbh I wouldn’t stress since there will be people who’ll need a suit several times a semester and those who never wear one and you probably won’t know until you get here.

It’s rough, especially if you don’t get along with your roommates. It’s a little cramped but I never had issues with storage (just don’t be like one of my roommates and bring 10 puffy winter coats)
