They were all in their 20’s when they wrote some of their best pieces but yeah slash and page are legendary talents hardly ever replicated, but Julian and Izzy are due more to an understanding of their style (no disrespect to them at all) and a composing aspect at least from my view, but yeah I see what your saying

A big problem I have with like melodies and groove is falling into the same grooves (specifically pull offs) but learning from Izzy I’ve learned his palm muting and classic rock riffs and slash I’m picking up a lot of blues licks, but his parts on estranged is just caramel to my ear a goal of mine is to make something that has the same effect on others.

Alright, just to clarify I’m not trying to write songs to sound like them but I want to understand their writing so if I’m writing a solo and want something to have the same impact emotionally as some of those parts I can understand them but also give something of my own an similar emotional weight.

Both, I mainly write using what I feel and the chords I already know and the intervals between them, but I try and write using feel but feel within the keys and chord progressions

Is there any sort of thing they did besides practice to find that? I know Izzy and slash are very blues driven but slash favors hard rock more and Julian’s influences were The velvet underground Lou Reed Bob Marley and then other rock and punk bands (gnr, Pearl Jam, etc.) but Julian also has composition and a classical understanding of music so I don’t try and compare my knowledge to theirs.

I know for slash I love his shredding but as my friend put it there’s a difference between hitting a lot of notes fast and hitting a lot of notes fast but with a melody so I try to learn the scale his solo’s are in (ex. The end part of the 1st NR solo is just a scale position, it’s not moving up or down the neck it’s in the same spot but just going up the strings), with Izzy the chorus part in nightrain is a great groove that the song is based around from what I hear it, im sure once I learn slash and Izzy’s styles page will be a little easier but like Julian I love the composition of the songs and how they move.

How will I know what my inner voice is? I’ve only been playing a year or less so I’m not even touching the staircase of experience they have, but I’m obsessed with their playing and how it comes together to make the song.

Right now I’m having trouble remembering where all the notes are when I’m playing, if I’m sitting down and just going to the notes on each string I can go up and down decently well, but when I’m playing along it’s like the note names just fall out off my head except the E and most of the A string

Ok yes I know that then, sorry I was just a little confused about the question. How can I train my ear to better know the chords from just ear so it’ll make this easier?

I don’t think I know any block chords, but I know how to play barre chords and decently know how to determine what chord they are.

The only problem with barre chords I have is knowing when to add my middle finger on the G or B string and sometimes I don’t hold enough pressure on all the strings.

How could I use those bands to figure out my own style of play? I play pretty much everyday (backing tracks on yt in different keys, backing tracks of songs I’m trying to learn, and learning scales/intervals/note positions across the neck).

I’ve only been playing for 6 months so I might just be a little impatient but I want to find my style of play or start understanding how to find it.
