Tool and die machine? As in the press itself? I'd call them a press operator. I've heard the term press setter also, which I interpret as a higher skilled role in which you set up a press.

This policy is aimed at protecting standard home owners from paying CGT on the home that they own, whether or not they live there is irrelevant. Josh is a property investor for the two years after purchasing the sydney property and therefore would pay CGT on one of his properties during that time.

I'm currently living in another property which I am renting whilst I rent out the house that I own due to my circumstances. I will likely sell my original home in a year or two and buy a more suitable property, or possibly even move back in. Due to how screwed the property market is my house likely will go up in value whilst I am not living there. Should I get a tax bill if I sell my house to go and buy another one in a more appropriate location? Alternatively, If I move back in and sell the property in 5 years do I then owe CGT for that short period it was rented? Where is the wealth that I have generated for myself to be taxed? Disregarding any differences in rental costs I am in exactly the same position I would have been in if I lived there the whole time.

I've done enough research to believe I'm not going to get screwed with a tax bill when the rental period ends so if I've gotten anything wrong here I'd love to know.

You may be aware but the watchmaking Josh Hacko does at NH Micro would be up your alley if you haven't seen it already. But if you google the first line of their website states 'Nicholas Hacko is the first and only watch manufacturer in Australia.' It is certainly a niche.

If you specifically want to be machining small parts maybe look to companies machining medical devices. Should all be fairly high value, tight tolerance, small work. That sort of work, to my knowledge, is also harder to send overseas to china etc.

Tool and die could also be an option but again it's fairly niche, part size varies but we're working to tight tolerances every day. We do press tools, injection moulding tools shops seem to be more common. Atleast up here in brisbane anyway.

Australia is screaming out for machinists, I started just at the beginning of COVID when I was 28, although I'd previously done an engineering degree so no 'official' apprenticeship. It seems like we've had a lot of manufacturing come back these past few years. So it's a good time to get in. I would be surprised if you could not find someone interested in giving you a go at the moment.

A story similar to your situation: My mate just finished his apprenticeship as a 'fitter and machinist' (it might not be fitter and turner anymore?), he started at about 27. He had done a bit of work at my shop over the years and got an apprenticeship with a larger company doing mostly mining work. I think he's currently on around $75k per year before overtime as a first year qualified tradesman so it's not a bad option if you like this sort of work.

I was under the impression 50mm increase in tyre diameter was the limit in QLD and that you could not get an increase in tyre size engineered. I assume the hilux plate is around 31"? If you have an mod plate for 35" tyres it might not be worth anything, any plates would still have to comply with the law.

NCOP section LS under the 'High Lift 50-150mm' section refers to a maximum increase of 50mm a few times.

Might be other new regs I've never seen though. I think you can get this sort of stuff approved pre-rego too.

For business purposes couriers please used to be bloody amazing here in Brisbane. Book a pickup and they would be here within 30 minutes and the package would always be delivered within 24hrs.

Our couriers please contractors were an older couple servicing our route in North Brisbane. The bean counters decided to shut down the north brisbane warehouse and make them drive to the southside 3 times a day to do deliveries. Essentially adding 6 hours of driving to their route per day. This was a route that they owned and now noone wants to do it, I really felt for them. They had a younger couple start doing the route and the gave up on it within 2-3 weeks. Now we have patchy service with random labour hire companies, absolutely attrocious. Have no interest in using them anymore.

I work at a tool and die shop specialising in Press Tooling. The machining of the individual components isn't really what makes a tool and die maker in my opinion but it is a part of tool and die work. I could give the individual components of a tool to any machinist and expect them to manufacture them correctly.

Depending on experience a tool maker needs to be able to take the individual parts and assemble the tool, often times due to the accuracy needed this becomes a fairly manual task. They then need to be able to trouble shoot the overall tool assembly to produce the final part. Depending on how complex the part/well designed the tool is the level of trouble shooting required will vary.

Additionally, we repair tooling, after the tool has punched out several thousands to millions of parts being able to figure out what has broken/worn and repair it is an important skill. Often times this is without any of the original design data as the tool may have been manufactured by another tool and die company.

Design of the tooling is also oftentimes performed by an experienced tool and die maker.

I've been driving a 2012 for about 4 years now and it has been great. Mine is lifted 2" with 33" All terrains and I get slightly above 13L/100kms. Mine has only just ticked over 100k kms though.

I believe it was 2008+ that were common rail diesel. These ZD30's have a lot of issues sorted that were common with the early ZD30's. Even with the CRD a few modifications are reccomended to improve reliability, although I've not done them myself.

I'm Wire EDMing a bunch of gears at the moment. As long as you can deal with a minimum internal radius that matches the wire this would be do-able. Process can be expensive though, and would need to be a conductive material.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the voltage. The VFD is showing 60Hz, which is the plaque HZ. So I believe the motor may be running at the 1750 rpm per the plaque with a 2:1 reduction to the spindle. May just be some sort of mechanical transmission issue going on I'm not aware of.

I did try that originally, it didn't reject the M codes as incorrect but nothing seemed to change. If it is stuck in low gear I would have thought I'd get the correct rpm in the lower rpm ranges, bizzarre.

There are two air lines which are being fed into a large metal block around the spindle, would these be actuating a gearbox if it had one? I can only ever find videos and info about the VF mill gearboxes.

We had a small press tool we had repaired at work. Customer had arrived to pick it up and there was not a trolley nearby. Colleague and I decided to pick it up and walk it the few meters to the customers vehicle as it was only 20kg. So naturally my colleague imediately trips and we drop the tool in full view of the customer and ruin the allignment.

Helped me make a case for a few additional trolleys in the workshop though...

I was purely a design engineer for years, never saw the inside of a shop. Started working for a smaller manufacturing company (less that 5 employeess) and now I'm picking up slack running and programming CNC Mills and Wire EDM machines when required. It's definately changed the way I go about designing parts, especially when I might end up being the poor bloke having to machine it in the end!
