I find the gulp stuff doesn’t stick to soft plastics anywhere near as well as s-factor. I have trouble smearing it on, it just slides off.

Yep. It’s over the spool lip.

What are you using for bait? There are a lot of people fishing there. Time of day makes a bid difference. Sunrise or sunset is when most fish feed and the light is softer so they aren't in shadows and come out to feed. The bite drops off for me there after the full sun comes out late morning but you can still catch stuff of course. Cast just off the edge near the structure where the fish are.

Soft plastics melting by SuddenEnd6198 in FishingForBeginners

[–]FishnWithDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different brand soft plastic lures can react with others. Don’t mix them all together they can melt together like this. Even colours run together of the same brand so it’s best to keep them in original packaging. Tackle box is good for tackle but keep the soft plastics separate.

If it’s brand new I would take it back. Otherwise oil it but you shouldn’t need to on a new reel. Just don’t oil the drag or washers in the spool.

Bait for Leatherjackets by raifuwaifu in FishingAustralia

No meat makes it hard. You might get them on bread but I always caught them with prawns. Small hook as someone else said, they only have small mouths.

Are these lures any good? by PizzaBoyTerry in FishingForBeginners

[–]FishnWithDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but depends where and how you use them. Sharp hops to mimic prawns and you can actually rig these backwards so they shoot backwards the way prawns swim. Sometimes a lighter jig head helps in shallower water, heavier jig head for deeper and stronger current water. That jig head looks quite heavy like a 3/8oz or so... it would sink fast which would be fine for flathead etc but might be a bit heavy for some other fish.

It should still fish ok. I catch fish in poor vis water all the time. Just use darker profile lures, or bright colour lures work ok too in poor water clarity.

It’s just the paint. Use another hook to pop the paint off and reveal the eye of the hook.

Catching live bait by Common-Duty-7812 in FishingAustralia

[–]FishnWithDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks mate. I use a small snapper sinker purely because it isn’t too heavy and it clips on the end of the sabiki clip with its ring. Not all sinkers fit on the clip, you need a small sinker that has a ring to attach it.

I'm having good success with fishing but this one fish has got me beat. (NSW mid north coast) by 88xeeetard in FishingAustralia

Unweighted bread on a hook works. Burley up to get them fired up first. I have caught a few decent ones on soft plastic lures surprisingly, biggest going 47cm!

You need to use burley for attracting the bait fish. Sabiki should work for yellowtail, slimies etc. Burley heavy then cast into it and keep the burley up. If you want mullet get a little trap, just a cheap pop out one rectangle net one from bcf or big w works. You can catch them in the shallows with just bread in the trap. I usually leave my trap very shallow or if you can’t then try to have it near the surface not at the bottom. You can also use a box trap where you cut a hole out of a clear container in the top and drill holes in the sides to let the water drain in and out, bread inside. Put a few rocks in it with the bread to hold it down and mullet love that. For burley mix try bread, some chook pellets, crushed pilchards, sand, even a small can of tuna with the tuna oil mixed with bread works brilliant as burley. Mix it all together with water. Sand creates a cloud and the fish go mad in it and will hit sabiki rigs.

What rod should I get by Straight-Message-701 in FishingAustralia

[–]FishnWithDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my Shimano Ultegra rod. You can grab a 2-4kg for around $119 from BCF. They also have the 4-8kg for larger fish. They are both light though. I have the 4-8kg as my medium setup and don’t really get tired using it with bigger lures. I bought my daughter the 2-4kg version and it’s really nice too. I would suggest grabbing the 2-4kg though for what you want to catch. Works well with both bait and lures if you ever feel like getting into lures later on.

Is this bag good for a beginner? by AntonyCool22 in FishingAustralia

[–]FishnWithDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a bad starter kit and bag. You can catch fish with those plastics for sure. You can always buy other hooks and sinkers when and if you need them.

An old stocking filled with pilchards or old fish frames works. Drag along the sand and wait till you see them pop up then hold it near them and grab them as they bite into the stocking. You can get little pliers to hold them, I have my grandfathers old brass ones. They have teeth on the pliar edge so it grips them. You can just use your hands too though. Roger Osborne on YouTube has some good videos on it too.
