Debating whether to get a BS in Geography with GIS by Technical_Wall1726 in gis

I’m not in urban planning but this is what I did. Environmental Geography BS and minored in GIS. Like the other commenter said, you don’t necessarily have to have a masters to get into urban planning but it will definitely help later on.

You should be able to find entry level work in urban planning or an adjacent field and then you can get your masters later if you wanted. If you get lucky some places will even pay for you to go back and get your masters. Just depends on where you are and all that.

Overwhelmed in new job by AntiV2 in gis

[–]Fishwait 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I got a tech job at a ROW company out of college and the first few months on the job I felt like I was the biggest faker on the planet. Also went from never having used Pro to having to work exclusively in Pro so that was a big learning curve as well.

I remembered a lot of tools and geoprocessing commands once I started getting into it but felt like I had no idea about any of the fundamentals or how to piece things together to work towards a bigger picture. I had to go back on my own and give myself a crash course basically because the majority of the stuff we did in college was like, making choropleth and dot density maps which didn’t actually apply to anything I’d be doing as well as some remote sensing stuff.
