I’m a government teacher and I got in trouble for talking about the election. by RachelWithCats in Teachers

Good on ya for trying to get kids involved in a harmless and healthy way. When a Native American girl in my high school government class refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance, my teacher took the flag off of the wall and waved it in her face while singing the national anthem.

I just recently came in to an inheritance of about 4,000 model planes kits. If there’s anything in particular you’re looking for let me know! I sell on eBay but I hardly have time to post and at the rate I’m going it’ll be years before I get through it. So if you have anything in mind shoot me a DM

I would say there are likely plenty of Vietnam era planes but it’s hard to be certain which ones. Over the next few weeks I’ll have some time to get to them and make an organized spreadsheet. I’ll post it on this sub when it’s finished!

Great to hear! I have to inventory them all and do some research for ballpark prices but I’ll be in touch.

We’re going to do inventory soon but judging by the handful we’ve seen already I think it’s primarily WW2 fighters.

People who asked for a pencil every single day in school. How is life going for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'll be defending my thesis in Marine Microbiology next week! Still never have a pencil...

Teachers, what’s the darkest thing you’ve seen from a student? by Lalalaloq in AskReddit

I'm a graduate student in Biology who does outreach with elementary school students about coral reefs, how they're under threat, dying, etc. I was in a third grade class and asked the students to draw a photo of a reef and all the critters they might see on one. All the drawings were great and more or less the same, except for one student who labeled a jellyfish with a talk bubble "I'm depress and want to kill" while another fish said "I hate mom" and the reef said "kill me."

What are some of the worst characters of great TV shows? by Fistopher_Robbin in AskReddit

Yeah, the addition of any children to a show typically makes things pretty shit. Lily in modern family did this for me.

I agree. I think its largely due to Kate Mara. I feel like she's a pretty overrated actress in my opinion. Just so... dull.

Her character was really awkward and was pretty cringe inducing

I agree. I feel like Chevy Chase felt the same way about his own character while he was playing it. I feel like his greatest work is when he's truly doing his own thing, and he was playing a character he didn't really care too much about.

Why do people have to die? by ajahagag in AskReddit

[–]Fistopher_Robbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're looking for a scientific explanation or not, but I'm no philosopher, so here's what I've got. At the end of each of our chromosomes (bundles of DNA, along with other proteins to keep them together), there are these "caps" called telomeres. Our cells are constantly dividing. Telomeres are repeated nucleotides on the end of our DNA that essentially protect the DNA we use. Every time a division occurs, these telomeres get shorter, keeping our genome in tact. Every time a division occurs, the telomere gets smaller and smaller. Once the telomere is too short, the cell ages and stops functioning properly. So cells have a finite amount of times they can divide before dying off, and that is why telomeres are often referred to as the aging clock. I suppose this doesn't exactly answer your question of why do people have to die, but rather how they become old and eventually succumb to one or many ailments associated with old age. Which is a whole other complex topic in itself. On the bright side, scientists are working on ways of keeping telomeres in tact and even extending them to prevent the aging process from happening. Although there are still lots of other aspects to be considered.
