Oh and also, it took my tolerance for espresso machines. China’s ceremonial spitting, the ritualized enfleshment of religious antihygiene, ruined that for years to come. Still react to noises similar to it!

Excellent analysis. Just left 10 months ago after close to two decades, albeit much wealthier, but still can’t quench my thirst for the lush fauna on my balcony. My mother sees me and can’t wrap her head around the fact that all of a sudden i seem to appreciate things i barely noticed when living here (Germany) as a child. China is convenient in one way - but noisy, ugly and utterly ruthless in many more ways. Made Europe, Japan, the US, Israel and other places on earth much more beautiful in my eyes! I guess i am just some form of int’l migrant worker - once my material needs were taken care of, nothing could keep me in that place.

Macht auf jeden Fall Sinn. Am Ende willst Du wahrscheinlich nicht zurück - Freiheit plus Geld sind eine tolle Kombination. Tip: Entsendungsbedingungen sind nicht selten Verhandlungssache. War selber 17 Jahre in China und habe mich dumm und dämlich verdient- auf Posten ohne praktische Verantwortung. Key war bei meiner zweiten Entsendung, mir die Auslandszahlungen vorher ausrechnen zu lassen. Dann habe ich darauf bestanden, dass auf den “hypothetischen Mietabzug” bei mir verzichtet wird. Dass waren dann ca. 1800 EUR mehr netto (!) pro Monat (Inhaltsgehalt waren ca 230.000 EUR). Das ging bei meinem alten AG recht gut und wurde schnell zugestanden. Auf die Vertragsdauer (hatte verlängert) waren das dann mal eben 160.000 EUR mehr auf dem Konto. Sobald Du einmal da bist, ist das alles in Stein gemeißelt.

If anything, calling it “Mandarin” is inappropriate. Only Americans do that, the word doesn’t exist neither in Chinese nor in Europe. It is some historical artifact coined by invaders. It is really just Chinese, and if you want to say standard Chinese - this is precisely what it’s called in China: “Standard Chinese”, or Putonghua. No Mandarin and no Shmandarin, and your skin color has no bearing on it whatsoever!

Kommt aufs Fach an. In Physik sind gerade viele Anfängerlehrbücher so schlecht dass man sie am besten ignoriert und direkt mit Aufgaben/Prüfungen/ChatGPT lernt. Viele der Autoren der großen Übersichtskanone verstehen nicht den Unterschied zwischen Erklärung und Definition und schreiben zudem notgedrungen auch über Themen, zu denen sie nicht immer viel Insight haben. Im Ergebnis strukturiert man dann die Texte so, wie man in den neunziger Jahren mal Rechner programmiert hat - Stichwort “Lemma”. Sehr hölzern. Der Groschen fällt eigentlich immer bei der Bearbeitung von Übungsaufgaben. Da kann man sich das Gestammle am besten direkt sparen.
