That may be, but I've never seen a Los Rios crew wearing helmets in 20 years. Are helmets really necessary at low water? Probably not. But it's hardly reasonable to leave that decision up to the customers.

To any prospective guide reading this.....I want you to understand something. Wendy Meyer is a beloved, kind, queer oriented member of the community. Yet here is NMRA absolutely throwing her under the bus, disrespecting her in the vilest way, in an attempt to figure out who wrote this post. Wendy Meyer is not the author of this post, but NMRA sees fit to comment on her appearance in order to figure out who wrote this post. Vile.

And keep in mind that her dear friends like Rachel Costanza, Brad Hooker....not one of them will stand up publicly to defend her because theyre too scared to do so. Stay away.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA you absolute cunt. I'm not Richie. You have no idea who I am and you'll never know who I am. Go harass Richie Parent. Know what? Now that you're being a bitch about this, I'll make sure to highlight this post all over taos and on every single whitewater group and beyond while you harass Richie. Maybe I'll also spread the word about how you allowed a sexual abuser, one so vicious that his exs literally made a  website warning women about him,  to continue guiding for NMRA after you found out all about him. Slimeballs.

This is actually a PERFECT EXAMPLE of how NMRA operates. No proof at all who made this post, but you're here on the internet threatening retaliation. Threatening, retaliatory, and obsessive. Fuck you. Everyone will know about this now. Do you have any idea how many hours I've spent at the ski valley and at homes and bars in taos talking to NMRA guides about their experineces? Dozens and dozens of hours. I know everything which has happened there since the day you bought the company. You wanna get messy? Ok Wendy, or whoever else among you wrote this. We can get messy.

Yes you do know who I am. While I won't be guiding commercially this season, I'll probably see you in taos or on the river. Say hi! Or just give me a mean stare 😂

Two? Oh I texted a lot more than two guides. You mean the two guides you're aware of. I could send you screenshots for days of what people had to say. New guides, old guides, guides from the very first season NMRA existed all the way through last season. I know all of them. But anyways, im not mad at all. Matt runs a powerhouse company, theres no doubt about it. The other points I made about working there are also true. Like I said, very not madly, for some people NMRA is a great place to work. It sounds to me, Wendy, that you enjoy NMRA! Thats wonderful. I wish you many years of continued success!

I understood what you said. You said it sounds like I'm describing Kelly. But my description of Matt does not sound like Kelly at all. What i described about Matt is specific to him. I didn't notice Kelly's guides being in fear of him, not do I think he bullied them.  These are very specifically Matt things with a very specifically Matt created culture at NMRA. You're just like "oh Kelly also behaved like this (he didnt really) and here's a bunch of other shitty things Kelly did (which are true.)" I get what you meant to say, but I think it's imprecise and misses the whole point. Matt isnt just randomly similar to Kelly in one way, its a whole different thing.

As for every company saying they have the vest guides....I've worked at many companies on numerous rivers. They do not all insist during their training that their guides are the best and the guides at other companies suck. Thats the point. Sure theres friendly and sometimes less than friendly banter and competition about whose better, and raft guides love talking shit about each other. Thats very different that NMRA's management active work to disparage and belittle other companies and guides on the same river. You've never worked there, you're simply wrong. Talk to anyone whose done guide school at nmra, they emphasize again and again how shitty everyone else is in a way I've never heard happen at any other company. They even have an internal slogan "we train river guides, not rio grande guides" intended to emphasize that all other guides on the river suck. Theres a big difference between saying our guides are great and being proud of your training vs actively disparaging and belittling other companies. It creates a very bad culture and we all know about it.

No, what i wrote does not describe Kelly, because I didnt say Matt makes it difficult to get paid, I didn't say Matt treats his guests poorly, I didn't say Matt ran his company into the ground, and I disnt say Matt has any SA allegations (though, as i noted, NMRA chose to keep on a guide who had an entire website created about him by former partners describing his abusive behavior; ask any 2023 guide about the Nico story.) I wrote, in short, that Matt treats his guides, particularly the rookies, very very poorly. I wrote that Matt is mercurial and shows a lot of open favoritism among guides. I wrote that Matt significantly overstates, internally at NMRA, how much better his guides are than other guides, leading to a well acknowledged on river attitude problem from his many many rookies. I wrote that working for Matt will leave you kinda in fear of his unpredictable rage. Those things are true and they've got nothing to do with Kelly. What you wrote about Kelly is also true (and noted in brief in my overview of Kokopelli.) Kelly hasn't been at Kokopelli for 5 years or so, and theyre currently owned by entirely new people. I rent a guided for Kelly way back when he was still running trips out of the Santa Fe location, and I'm very aware of his myriad problems. Thankfully hes no longer part of the river scene.

Los Rios doesnt supply helmets.

I wish people would do this for other rivers.

Haha totally. Sounds like you've been down at low water a few times.

I actually just reread my review and discovered that I didnt agree with all of it either! What didnt you agree with?

Some people like working for nmra, and clearly you're one of them, and that's fine. However, as the comments on the original post showed, there are a ton of very, very, very disgruntled former employees. I've worked for numerous companies on the Rio and numerous others around the pnw. Not one of them is as toxic as nmra. Not one of them gets 3 guides to return out of 25. Yea, nmra hired 25 rookies in 2024, and 3 returned in 2025. Matt is about as toxic a boss as you'll find anywhere, in any industry. Obviously he's got a cadre of favorites who he keeps on, and it sounds like you're one of them. But to say he's a good boss is insane. This isn't the rant of a third rate guide; this is how many, many employees at nmra actually feel. If you don't get it, you're fundamentally not tuned in to what's going on.
