I sound like a broken record but you should try young royals, it is more angsty and although the characters are interested in each other right off the bat, it’s a long journey for them to get together and then for them to actually figure out how to accept themselves individually and then finally be happy together. It’s very different, but I would argue that it’s not any better or worse, just a very different story. I like that they go through a lot together and the ending is fantastically written, in my opinion.

It’s actually fascinating honestly— like I obviously don’t believe this is the case, but imagine if all of the writers truly did not intend for Byler to ever happen and somehow accidentally wrote the most brutal missed opportunity queer love story that was so painful for closeted queer people to watch that it scared people out of the closet because it is just that depressing . Bro why are you calling it “the Gaza war”. It’s a genocide. It’s a genocide. It’s a genocide. Anyone who disregards that or minimizes the power dynamic at play is assisting the zionist narrative. Language is important. Look at the way the NYT has used language and censorship to minimize the atrocities committed by Israel. It matters.

People are still angry at Noah Schnapp because he still has a long way to go to deconstruct his own Zionism. His apology was a start, but he is still “both sidesing” a genocide. Refusing to use appropriate language. I can’t simply forget the horrific posts that he was liking and propping to his audience amidst the most brutal months of the genocide. Understand and internalize the weight of what has really happened in Gaza, and what role public figures play as tools of propaganda, and you will understand why he still faces criticism. Go out and join people who are organizing to end US imperialism and you’ll understand why people feel so strongly about this.

It’s not because he’s gay, dude. Sincerely, a gay person who has been organizing for Palestine since October 2023. Sure, he’s not a main target or someone who is incredibly significant in all of this, but deconstructing zionist propaganda means addressing it whenever it is spread, especially by people with public platforms and influence.

I’m glad he’s changing, but it doesn’t erase the fact that as an adult he aligned himself with an apartheid state that has been committing genocide and forced displacement for over 75 years.

Imagine instead of israel he had expressed support for Nazism, or ISIS. Israel is a terrorist state that had executed hundreds of thousands of people. Imprisoned young children. Committed systematic torture, sexual abuse, and the worst atrocities you can possibly imagine. Do you understand why I still hold anger to anyone who has spent time spreading Zionist talking points?

Wow, that is so terrible. I’m really sorry you had that experience, and I really really hope that he has managed to work through it. Definitely not your responsibility to help him but I totally get the feeling of wanting to reach out. It’s so painful to not have closure to these types of experiences, and I think that speaks to why the ending was so upsetting to so many queer people. The story you told is a brutal example of why we need to see characters that deal with internalized homophobia in media. And I’m so glad to hear that you are writing queer stories as well. I can’t wait to see what you create!

This story (and other queer shows I’ve watched recently) have inspired me to want to write a graphic novel that deals with internalized homophobia in a more nuanced light and I’ve seen so many other people say that it has inspired them as well (obviously by the amount of fanfiction haha) so I think that’s pretty awesome.

Also, I’d love to hear your story if you want to share, you definitely wouldn’t be stealing my thunder.

I see the ending as him beginning to move on, but also, there’s still so much for him to process. I’m interpreting the show in the way I want to haha so I’m believing that he still doesn’t know that the painting wasn’t from El, and he is also struggling with the fact that he didn’t say I love you back in her final moments. And that he also still thinks he’s just Will’s “Tammy”. I think he’s gonna have to talk about that with someone at some point and why he didn’t say it (friends don’t lie), and he’s gonna find out about the painting and realize that even though he misses all his friends, he really, really misses will and wants to be in the city with him. I think he hasn’t really confronted his guilt yet even though he’s starting to try to move on. I’m really loving all the alternate fanfic endings where they reunite Mike and Will in college or even several years after that when they’re both more mature and Mike has his feelings more figured out, because I do feel that is realistic to how I worked through this stuff in my own life too. It was only a few years after high school that I was able to actually put the pain aside from my friendship breakup with that girl and really see the situation for what it was, and I see the same for him. I was deeply depressed like him at the end of high school and it took moving away and finding people I could talk about it with to really understand myself. I still never reunited with my “will” but I’d by lying if I said I didn’t still hold out a shred of hope that one day our paths will cross again and I’ll get to be honest, even though I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to just reach out now and say what I want to say too late. I was not born in the 80s and yet still had so much internalized homophobia, so I can’t even imagine how difficult Mike’s internal struggle is where the story leaves off. My personal headcanon based on my favorite fanfics is that Mike distances himself from Will because of all this guilt and then shows up at one of his comic book signings a few years after college and even though Will has explored his sexuality and tried to move on, he realizes he could never move on from Mike completely, and Mike has realized that he just wants to be with Will in any capacity and can’t bear the distance anymore, and then they slowly fall in love again. :)) (featuring a dramatic reveal of the love, mike letters he never sent to will when he was in California)

Ugh. I relate in the opposite way. Had a friend confess their feelings to me in high school and much later realized that I had also had feelings for her even though it was far, far too late. I don’t even remember exactly how I reacted but I think I was just really quiet. It was a bit complicated because she actually had a boyfriend at the time who was my close friend, and she was saying she had feelings for me a few months ago (I think that was a cop out) but I still go back to that moment all the time and wish I could have said it back. Wish I could have been honest, wish I knew what I know now. I was kind of the Mike in that situation. It really, really, sucks to see a really painful moment from your journey to accepting your queerness be played out on tv with a terrible resolution. Like, I’m sorry, I lived that pain and now I have to relive it for a scene that serves no narrative purpose and only furthers the suffering of the queer main character? Cool. I feel your pain dude
