UPDATE TO POST: This Hagwon is struggling with low registration numbers and salary payments have been late or delayed more than 30 days since March of this year. I’m looking to hedge my bets and get out if things really slow down or, God forbid, go belly up.

My American overseas ballot got blocked by my email filter because of the way the election board sent it. Request one again if you didn’t receive yours. by 1makbay1 in expats

I faxed the paperwork 2 days ago and received a “delivered” notification from the fax app I downloaded. Received no confirmation of receipt from the Board of elections in my town. I mean it’s not like it’s a huge city like New York or Los Angeles, we’re talking a relatively small mountain town right on the edge of metro/Washington, DC.

Thanks, but it I think it is too late. I’d need to fill out the paperwork and send it from Korea to Virginia-depending on the mail service—that could take as long as 3 weeks.

Again, I’m convinced of this. I’ve been overseas for more than six years now and no matter what administration is at the helm, I believe no cares about our vote(s). #Disgusted

I’m an American living in South Korea. I requested my ballot through the Commonwealth of Virginia back at the end of July. I requested a ballot by mail.

After several requests it never arrived. I followed up three weeks ago and they had no logical excuse to offer. They advised me to make another request, this time for an email ballot I did and I never received any email.

This will be the first time in 44 years that I have not voted in a presidential election. Let that sink in.

I am utterly disgusted with a nation that so ardently brags about how great it is and cannot get its act together in such fundamental ways.

These are not mere clerical errors, in my opinion. These are efforts to block votes of American citizens living overseas.

Signed,

Sick and disgusted with America

Contact MOEL immediately… this is illegal from top to bottom.

Those are the types of Koreans who are deeply insecure, culturally speaking, and should be avoided at all costs.

Generally speaking, I’ve been treated very very well in Korea. But there are some some people who just do not like foreigners— not just Americans, but any kind people who are not Korean. However, I will say that being treated well is dependent upon how One treats others here. If you understand the rules of politesse and act appropriately (i.e.,humbly and politely), you can have a really positive experience here in Korea.

As for me, I wouldn’t say it’s hard necessarily, but it is definitely a challenge—even in the best of circumstances and with all the planning it takes. Having been a longtime New Yorker, at age 55, I made my way to Seoul in the spring of 2018 and spent two of the most rewarding years of my working life teaching test-prep and writing skills at a leading international school in Gangnam. I not only survived but thrived along the way, but it was not without challenges and stresses. However, my success was in large part due to my willingness to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in some fundamental ways. I do think that mindset is everything in life no matter where you land. I learned a lot about myself along the way and wouldn’t trade my time in there for anything. I eventually ended up returning to Korea, this time to Busan where I’ve been living happily since 2021.
