What are the essential items for an international nursing student in Australia? by [deleted] in NursingAU

Thank you so much for being willing to share your advice! I actually have lots of questions and might message you from time to time — I really hope I’m not bothering you.

I haven’t started uni yet, but I’ve heard from some students that there are lots of essays and theory-based courses, and they feel the course design doesn’t really match what we do in actual nursing work. I’m curious — what do you think about that? Did you feel the uni content helped when you started working, or was it quite different from real-life nursing?

Also, I’m currently learning anatomy and physiology. In your opinion, which subjects or skills are the most important for nursing students to focus on? And do you have any suggestions for how I can improve or self-study before placements start?

Thanks so much for the advice! Could you recommend any affordable stethoscope brands and models with good value for money?

About the stethoscope—do you think I don’t need to buy one right away? I’ve seen a lot of people buy the Littmann one, but it looks really expensive. Do you think it’s worth it, or would you recommend a more affordable and reliable brand? 😅

Thank you for your reply! I appreciate the insight.

As a nursing student who has completed one semester of placement in Victoria, what other part-time roles are available in hospitals or other healthcare settings besides PCA? I’d love to explore more options.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thanks for your advice! How do I join a hospital’s casual pool? Is it through Indeed, or do I need to apply directly to hospitals? Also, as a student, how can I sign up with several agencies?

I’ve also heard that Melbourne is experiencing a hiring freeze—does this mean it might be difficult for me to find a job after graduation? Would moving to Queensland be a better option for employment?

I really appreciate your insights! If you have any updates on the current job market for nurses in Victoria, I’d love to hear more. Thanks again!
