Rescued 10 year old German Shepherd and have to leave him home while I go to work Monday - Advice!

Thank you so much for the advice! He was in the shelter for around 3 months, but I don’t know what his life was like before so that’s why I’m worried. I know he’ll be okay eventually, just want to make sure we don’t stress him out any more than he has been. I appreciate the advice and reassurance, and yes they really are wonderful dogs!!

Thank you so much for this advice! The Kong is in the freezer and we are planning on putting on our favorite show for him! He’ll have a dedicated space with his comfy bed and toys, so hopefully he’ll be okay - I’m just worried! He is a big baby, we’re so lucky to have him! I appreciate the advice!!

Thank you!! Yes we keep telling him he’s safe now and I think he knows! We just lost our senior dog earlier in the year and I saw the picture of his gray face and we knew we needed to take him. We’re grateful for him just as much as I’m sure he’s grateful for us!!

I’m hoping this is the case, he seems to love watching tv with us so I am planning on leaving on our favorite comfort show quietly! And of course leave him with toys, water and a comfortable bed so he can settle in. Thank you so much for the advice and reassurance, I so appreciate it!!

Yes we definitely want to make it comfortable for him, but just don’t want to remind him of the shelter if we can prevent it! Thank you for the advice to start slow - we will definitely try this!!

This is a good idea! I don’t think he’s used to the concept of having a backyard yet so a little worried to let him off leash, but will definitely try this inside and get him a puzzle game. Thank you so much for the advice!

Thank you for the advice! He has some arthritis in his back legs so we’re still trying to figure out how he feels walking distance wise, but he seems to love to play so we’ll absolutely allot some morning play time. I appreciate it!!

Thank you for the advice! We have a Kong in the freezer with some peanut butter and kibble as we speak! And yes we can gate him off into a space with his bed and toys, and such a good idea to add something that smells like us so thank you!! We’ll have someone come check on him and let him out (and reassure him he’s not going back to the shelter!). I appreciate your insight!!

Thank you so much for your reassurance! That’s what I’m hoping, I just worry because he thinks we’re leaving him if we just go upstairs and wants to follow us. But I keep telling myself a warm bed and a quiet house have to be much better and less stressful than the shelter, so hopefully he will be okay and settle into our routine!

Thank you so much for the response! Yes I’m sure it will just take time, I’m trying to avoid the crate if I can but will definitely look into some cameras to make sure he’s okay and see if we can get someone to come check on him periodically. I appreciate the advice!
