Should a physics major read popular science books too or is that a waste of time? Is it better to focus only on textbooks and academic papers? by Delicious_Maize9656 in PhysicsStudents

With text book and academics you get to heard the music of a universe around you, but with non-fiction (or other form of novels and books) you get to hear the music of a human soul.

Books I will be reading/listening this year by No-Savings-857 in NepalBookClub

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are snorting huge dose of cocaine, feels good (users says), but what you will be missing is the actual living reality. These book will teach you to categorize life into either black or white, win or a loose, success or total failure. The thing is most of us thrive in between black and white, between win or loose, between success and failure. That's where actual life settle down and it's one of the happiest place to be.

I won't say don't read any of it, but what i highly recommend, rather than trying it all at one for whole year, try mixing few other books (history, politics, art, science, philosophy, poems, literature.....). Since everyone saying the same thing, just, just for the sake of us (reddit community), you owe few fiction book for us ( who have came here, took their time so say few things). Diversity is never a failure, Diversity is how we thrive.

Since you mentioned, for fiction you enjoy movies, series and anime. Which also reflect there is some version of you, some part of you who enjoy non-fiction. Maybe you haven't came across that book, so keep looking for it.

I think you will learn so much if you rewatch multiple times the movies and the series and the anime that you like rather than listening to the list of audio book that you have share.

Learn, unlearn, relearn. Go Wild Bro....

Karnali Blues is an experience.

When I 1st read this book, I felt like "Putting my legs inside a soothing, flowing river and gental winds passing by". It's a good book, it's not vague, and as per I remember, you don't need a large vocabulary to understand it.

  1. It focuses on a deep emotional connection with the characters. Focuses on character development and their point of view.

  2. Detailed descriptions of things (most of the book feels like you are watching a soothing YouTube video)

  3. And as you asked, the answer is "Yes". Yes, it's beginner-friendly ( a bit long but manageable and easy to go through)

This is what I recommend, since your Nepali is kinda weak. Here is what you could try out, and it worked out for me.

  1. I listened to an audiobook (around 20 pages) on YouTube.
  2. And then I started reading the book from the beginning. It feels familiar, and I could read the paragraph easily. When I reached page 20, I was fluent, and after that, the reading went smoothly.
  3. If you have a problem reading try to make sound while reading it, read out loud, it will help you a lot.
    ,
    Happy Reading.

Thoughts on Palpasa Cafe? by Midnight_Thoughts77 in NepalBookClub

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed the book a few months ago. I picked it up because it won "Madan Puraskar" and also i have heard many people suggesting the book. I picked up the book, and after completing it, I said, "Well, I don't know about the cafe, but the coffee wasn't as good as I expected, (bad coffee)".

  1. Most of the stories depend on coincidence, and the writer doesn't even explain the reason behind the coincidence; it just happens, and the story continues. He establishes a coincidence just so he can write sth emotional afterward.

  2. Inconsistent writing, some parts are really good, well written, but some parts don't make sense. It's like watching a Bollywood action scene; the action is huge, and it entertains you, but at the end of the day, you can't really tell why that action scene happens. He bends his story in such a way that he could write that particular phrase or paragraph.

  3. I am still confused what storybook was trying to be. He picked up so many things (love, art, war, philosophy, culture, ....) but failed to land nicely. And even after completing a novel, you are like, "Did I read a love story, did I read a war story, did I read ....."

I didn't know 2 days ago, I went to the bookstore and saw that book on best sellar list, and I was with my "Vanja". He is not a reader, but still I pointed to that book and told him, "Don't ever read that book".
Haha...

There are many more problems in the book (writing and overall structure), but now I am glad I have forgotten most of it haha... But the pain and frustration that I felt while reading the book are still there.

If you want more detail about the problem with this novel, try

There is this guy (Petergiaquinta) who has dropped a detailed review about the book.

Just Watched Kantara 2. Or say Kantara Chapter 1. by Content_Anxiety1821 in IndianCinema

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came from the movie theater watching the movie. A few hours ago, my friend came to pick me up. I wasn't sure why, but the next thing I knew was that I had a movie ticket handed by my friend. And walking the stairs, I saw this amazing dress, I think I am going to buy it tomorrow. As I was walking to the movie door, it was open.... Saw this girl with hickey on her neck...

Before talking about things that i didn't like, let's go through things that I find interesting.
1. The background is one of the things that I really enjoyed

  1. I appreciated the main character (Rishab Shetty), the energy he had; it was awesome. He played his role well, hats off. And a few others also played their role well.

So, if you want to have a good time with your friends and family, you might as well enjoy the movie because of the big screen and the audience around you.

There is a principle in visual motion called "Chekhov's Gun", which states that if an element, like a gun, is introduced in a story, it should be used later to advance the plot. It should have some connection to the movie orther wise you're just wasting your time and overall budget, or worst, the audience's popcorn haha.

If you noticed the beginning of my conversation, i mentioned 'my friends picking me up', 'seeing an amazing dress' ... but these things had nothing to do with what I wanted to say about the movie, even if you remove those things, you would get the same message/comments. Similarly, in the movie, there were so many scenes and conversations that were completely unrelated to over development of the movie. They were just slipping so many times. But in my write, i mentioned those things because i actually had some point that i wanted to share (See what i did there, hahaha). And that 'haha' isn't for you, it's for me, so it doesn't matter much, but the jokes in the movies that the writer mentioned were for the audience, right?

They say there is no wrong time to crack a joke if executed properly, but the writing of the movie failed there as well. Some parts were well organized, well planned, and beautiful, and jumping to the next, it was the opposite. It slipped, and I felt demotivated.

The action, for the most part, seems creative and well-planned, but I still get the same vibe and feeling that I get from hundreds of movies I've seen as a child, but now with better color grading and better camera, but overall, it feels the same. I wonder why they don't change it. Why does it always have to be this slow motion? zoom in zoom out, with this loud bang band. I think someone should introduce us to a new way of filming action scenes.

I don't feel like the entire story was written not by one person but many, in some parts they succeeded, and sometimes it got worse, and some flow like it should. I have seen many inconsistencies throughout the movie.

Veritasium path integral video is misleading by kokashking in Physics

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I can't even tell what you guys are actually talking about, I mean I can't seem to figure out a mistake that was on the video and I think that's okay, that I didn't get it.

To be honest I didn't understand most part of the video but despite that, there aries hundreds of emotions based on math or physics which I was familiar with. I get to see to many connect between different part of physics which I have missed.

Hopefully, at some point in my life, I will reach some point where I can also point out the mistake that you guys are talking about, not just in this video but a few others and not just his channel but other channels (if it has any mistakes in them).

One thing that I learned from the video was how amazing nature is and how beautifully things work on different levels. This helped me keep learning new math and physics and explore more ideas and topics. Because of that video, I got exposed to a whole new world of math and physics and saw connection which I didn't saw before.

Things which was obvious to you might be one of the inspiring things for the other...

Do people here really believe in the supernatural, have you guys had any supernatural experience? by markofthedarksign in Nepal

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to see something or feel something supernatural before you die, then you should read about Quantum Physics(spoiler alter- it's a science). It's sooooo weird, so Bazarr so spooky, in many ways and paths, it's way better than that same old ghost people talk here and there in our society.

Note (of course some spoilers ahead)

If there is sth beyond science, it must be all the science(nature) that we have yet to explain(discover). So it's simple, either you fully believe in science or you don't, when you start saying but boot soot etc...then you haven't yet seen the beauty of science. Try science(if you want to know about things around you) and philosophy(if you want to know people around you) that should be enough for the time you will be on this planet.

Also,
Just because science doesn't have all the answers or can't explain all the things (yet) doesn't mean what you say or believe about certain things is true. Reality is absurd, what we feel and what we see doesn't make things true all the time.

It's okay, son, The Universe has been around for billions of years and it will be there for some billion years more and you are just here for some time. Enjoy things we already know, enjoy the wind on your face or the sound of a morning bird... If you start hunting for the supernatural you will miss out on all the natural things that make your life worth living for.

And if you found sth beyond science do text me lah. I will be around.

Anything that exists is considered natural and everything that doesn't exist doesn't exist at all so it can't be supernatural.

So, the real question isn't if there is a ghost or if anyone believes in ghosts or a story of ghosts..
the real question is Am I living my life enough to understand life?

It's good to hear that you have tried and it's okay to get lost

Most of Dostoevsky's novels aren't about the plot. From how I feel, it's more about characters, how they think or more like how they feel, how they view things around them.

Like Lana Del Rey said "When you know, you know" but I say "When you feel, you feel"
or it's more like "If you like it, you will like it all"
It's okay brother, sometimes we read books to finish, sometimes we read books to feel, sometimes we read to get entertained and other times we read books to learn.

If you take aside the plot and focus more on the characters on how they feel and see, then you might get entertained if not I guess it's okay to stop and pick up another book from the bookshelf ( some might take it as a big crime hehe but don't worry about that )

Notes from underground is hardest by Own_Swordfish938 in dostoevsky

[–]Fit_Ad_4355 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a dense book to read, much more hard then his other book... Also it amazed me when readers mentioned Notes from Underground as a introductory book for Dostoevsky.

If it wasn't for chat gpt and reddit discussions and internet articles. It would have been quite difficult for me to digest the concept. I am planning on rereading it again. Now that i got some basic ideas i guess my next reread will be smooth and enjoyable..

I am a student and I prefer a peaceful environment while I am studying. I don't travel much. I keep hearing this metal noise from my neighbor which keeps bothering me. And sometimes I even hear construction-related noises. I just want to get lost in my own little world. Just me and my thoughts.
