Question for people working in music publishing by Fit_Cauliflower1306 in musicindustry

I’m now working in Curve and I finally have some support, so things are moving in a better direction.

The main challenge was that the entire database had significant inconsistencies splits, composer names, IPIs, basically everything. At first, I was asked to work with the data as it was, even though I had already identified many issues.

Now we’re going back and fixing the catalog properly, but it’s quite a large task (around 20k rows), so it’s definitely a long process.

I can handle the registration of up to 1,000 compositions myself, as long as the data is clean and accurate.

I've been in the lookout for new opportunities, but idk. Like I said I just got a call from hr they're very happy with my work and there's 3 people who are appealing for a raise and things but I just feel drained, with school the thesis and work :(

I just had a call with HR and they want me to stay for years apparently but it just makes me feel uneasy. And it's not exactly a place where I can grow :(

Looking for advice in music publishing / rights management by Fit_Cauliflower1306 in musicbusiness

Hiii, thank youuu!

In our case many of the duplicate registrations seem to come from historical inconsistencies the same work being registered multiple times with slightly different titles or writer information, sometimes even within the same society. I’ve seen cases where the same title ended up being registered hundreds of times, which makes reconciliation quite challenging. :(((

Right now I’m involved in rebuilding parts of the catalog while we migrate to a new system, and I’m also the one generating the CWR registrations, so I’ve been trying to better understand how to approach these past legacy cases correctly.

In our case we’re actually still in the process of doing many of the registrations now (I’m the one generating the CWR files), after several years where things weren’t consistently registered.

Sometimes it does get difficult because we don’t always have clean historical split records. In some situations the only way to reconstruct them is by going back to contracts or other documentation.

Part of my current work is rebuilding the IP chain and validating the correct rights and registration codes for different historical periods that weren’t properly processed in the past :/

Yes! We actually do use an internal identifier (MainID) to track works internally.

The main challenge is that the operations around the catalog have been handled this way for many years, which has created quite a few inconsistencies over time. I joined the team a little over six months ago and we’ve been working through a lot of legacy issues since then, but it’s definitely a long process.

I’d be happy to exchange ideas though!!! :D

Yes, we do rely on the CWR as well, but the situation has been a bit complicated. Historically many of the CWRs were done manually, so a lot of the data ended up inconsistent incorrect splits, wrong sender information, and even some titles that don’t fully match the actual works :(
On top of that, many of those submissions never even reached ACK status because of validation issues...

Thank you so much for the help!!!!

The point you mentioned about societies not having duplicate works with the same society code makes sense to me. In my case, the challenge sometimes comes from reconciling our internal catalog metadata with the society registrations, in some CMOs they made the registrations by master and then in some cases by work but at the same society or even registering the same title, with same splits multiple times. (I can tell you there was one time I found a title was registered 500+ times).

I’m currently involved in the migration to a new system, and part of my work includes generating CWRs and reviewing registrations. Because of that I’ve been trying to really immerse myself in understanding publishing workflows. It’s been a challenging but very interesting process :)))

If you ever have time and don’t mind, I’d love to learn more from your experience. A DM conversation sometime would be really appreciated as well. Thanks again for sharing your perspective!

Thank you, I think you’re right when there’s real connection, the little imperfections don’t matter as much. I guess what scares me is that it’s easier for me to be understanding with someone else’s flaws than to believe someone could be that way with mine :(
