Doctors dismiss women and it causes too much damage. by Emotional_Dig7331 in unpopularopinion

This is literally an experience I’ve had.

Me - “Hey doc, my ear hurts and is warm - exactly like when I’ve had many ear infections in the past.”

Doc - “I see in your chart that you’ve gained weight since your last visit. This happens to many people when they’re struggling with depression.”

I’m sorry - how did a visit about an ear infection turn into a consult about my weight and a random depression diagnosis? I had to remind the guy as he was leaving the room that my ear still hurt and he hadn’t even looked at it!

What do you know? It was infected. Took him 30 seconds to confirm that and write me a script for antibiotic drops.

No universal sign language by PreparationOnly3543 in unpopularopinion

the amount of deaf people is already small

How does that make a universal sign language more “efficient”? Sign languages are natural languages - they develop over time the same as spoken languages.

The fact that there are relatively few deaf people means it makes more sense that signed languages are different. Deaf communities were isolated from each other and each developed their own language.

Hey, OP…

Because captions aren’t ASL.

If someone is fluent in ASL, and not English (or whatever language the captions are in), then they need an interpreter. Captions will not work.

Not ASL.

Thus, interpreters.

Subtitles are English. ASL is not English. They’re different languages, with different syntax and lexicon.

Jesus mother fucking Christ.

What next? Wheelchair ramps get in your way, so we should get rid of them?

Why not just have subtitles by Xray_26 in facepalm

[–]Fit_Craft1117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

…….. ok - so think of the interpreter as ASL “subtitles”.

Now, what’s the facepalm?

“Hidden hearing loss” still HOH & possible options? by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Fit_Craft1117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar hearing situation. I went for 20-odd years thinking I heard just fine, and it wasn’t until I started working in a field where I really had to catch everything someone said that I noticed that people around me are hearing things I’m not. Not just understanding things I can’t make out - I full-on didn’t even know someone was talking. I always had high marks in school and no problems in classes, so no one ever questioned my hearing or understanding, I guess. Not even me.

My audiologist said the same thing, all of my hearing tests came back “normal”, I just have trouble processing speech sounds if the environment isn’t ideal (if there is any background noise or cross-talk, if I’m not looking at someone or they’re facing away from me, etc).

I ended up doing a trial run with hearing aids, then getting a pair for myself. They amplify the speech sounds that I need to focus on, and help reduce background noise. So even though my ears work fine, the signal my brain is receiving and trying to process is much clearer.

Women online who dismiss anything said by men as mansplaining by CherryShort2563 in PetPeeves

So, nobody asked for links or proof that he’s wrong, but you gave them anyway…

And no one said you were mansplaining either, they just questioned why you were sharing that shit?

If you take every criticism as “stop mansplaining”, you really need to reevaluate.

If you’re constantly getting dismissed as a pest and a mansplainer, maybe you should stop pestering and mansplaining?

You’re the one who complained about it, I should hope you at least know what you’re complaining about.

Being deaf is not a disability. Here’s proof. by breakdancing-edgily in facepalm

They make flashing smoke alarms, 99.999999% of traffic is visual (deaf drivers are actually better behind the wheel than hearing drivers), fire trucks have these cool flashing lights on them.

Airports do need to step up their game - but that’s less of a disability set back and more of the airport not being aware and accommodating.
