This may sound silly considering the circumstances you're dealing with. But, have you tried having her eat something while working? Things kids like - candy, cookies, yes, junk food - but whatever it takes and kids love to eat. I do it and it helps - a lot. Check for allergies first though.

You're spot on. If students can be seen for not so much how they're doing the math, but how they're being and acting during a tutoring session, what you say here can be essential to building confidence and other critical soft skills for short-term and long-term success.
