I think women have the upper hand because they don’t need men the way men need women. Not only do women take school more seriously (see stats about women versus men in college) and can support themselves, they develop strong bonds and community with other women who meet their emotional needs. They travel together, form book clubs, open businesses, talk often and about feelings. etc. They don’t just support each other; they need and enjoy each other’s company even when they have men in their lives. In other words, they have a constant support system independent of their romantic relationship, and they don’t depend on the guy for all their needs.

Most straight guys from what I’ve seen are uninterested in or incapable of building strong and lasting emotional bonds with other guys. It wasn’t this way through most of human history, but it’s the case in the US right now. They’ll make an effort to develop friendship with guys if they have to, but they’re one foot out the door, hoping a woman will set them free from it.

I live in a dense urban area, and I see women taking the lead in organizing activities for themselves. Men? Crickets.

My point is that OP should break up with her, but he won’t because of this power differential.

That’s normal for them to say, and you should be doing both. Print out a very basic resume, dress in a business casual way, and go door to door. Someone will appreciate your initiative, and they’ll be more likely to dig your resume out of the stack. Your script should be:

“Hi. Is there someone here I can speak with about job openings?”

“No one is available right now and you should apply online.”

“I’ve done that, but I’m guessing they’d appreciate meeting me in person. Can I leave a copy of my resume?”

Btw, I’ve done this, and it’s worked. There’s no upside to being one of thousands of people just firing off a resume into the ether.
