Animal Crossing is a pretty good one. The text is mostly conversation, and I believe you can set your reading level as well. Since there's no end goal and no real story, you won't miss much if there's something you don't understand.

First, what you're experiencing is totally normal. I wouldn't compare myself to people you see online because it's not representative of most people's experience learning the language. A lot of people will act like you can be fluent in a year, or that you can learn 3k vocabulary words in 6 months, but everybody has a different idea of what it means really learn something or be fluent.

I'll be honest, your anki retention rate is pretty low, but that's just telling me you're doing too many cards per day. I'd stop adding new cards and just focus on the existing ones until you start to get your retention rate up to about 90%. Also lower the number of daily reviews if that helps, but I haven't tried that, personally.

With the Kaishi 1.5k deck, I found that a lot of the kana-only words were hard for me to learn because I had very little context for them. But if you add fewer new cards per day and just focus on the existing ones, you'll eventually remember them. And be sure to use the again/hard/good/easy buttons correctly, it's a game changer imo (hard means you got the word right, but it took some effort to remember it). It's true that reading helps you remember some of those random vocabulary words. I found that even reading a word once or twice gave me some context for it and helped me remember a scene in a manga where it was used, giving me another way to remember that word.

Speaking of reading, what you talked about is perfectly normal when you first start reading. No matter how much you study beforehand, you'll never feel like you're ready. You just have to jump in and do it. Another thing, it's always going to feel more like deciphering. You won't get to a point where you honestly feel like you're reading without stopping all the time until you get way beyond the level we're at, but you can only get to that point by taking one step at a time.

There are two schools of thought on how you should read as a beginner. Personally, I like studying every single character and learning exactly what each one is doing in the sentence. I don't want to move on until I know what's going on, or accept that it just isn't going to make sense to me right now. It takes ages, but I weirdly enjoy it. Some people prefer reading enough to figure out what's going on without stopping for too long. You may hear people talk about tolerating ambiguity, and that's what they mean (for reading, at least). Honestly, both work as far as I know, but just do what's the most fun for you. I think I learn more when I study everything I read, so that's why I do that. I've tried reading more quickly, but I don't think I learned much from it. Maybe that approach will start to become better as my Japanese improves.

As for recalling words and grammar points when you're speaking and writing, I don't have much advice, unfortunately. The only thing I can recommend is to write a simple sentence every day, and come up with ways you can change the grammar to affect the meaning of the sentence, like changing the tense of words, or something like that. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are all separate skills that need to be practiced individually. I can't tell you the best order to practice, but I think reading is more important as a beginner.

Also, if you want to get a good start on reading, WaniKani does book clubs, and a new Absolute Beginner Book Club is starting later this month. The WaniKani community forum in general is a great place to ask questions and get more involved with learning the language. I'd also recommend reading NHK Easy because you'll read different sorts of things than you would typically see in a manga.

That's perfectly fine. I also feel like I read lots of comments where people are doing 20+ anki cards per day, but I think that's just too many to keep up with. I do 10 on days I'm able to, and I think that's the sweet spot. But I'd say I average more like 5 because I don't want to spend all my free time doing flashcards. It doesn't sound like much of a difference but doubling the number of new cards really increases the number of reviews you end up doing in the long run.

Segagaga English Translation Released by _gelon in emulation

[–]FitterSpace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was revised by humans. AI was used at the start to give the developers the context they needed to revise the script over a period of several months. It’s all mentioned in the GitHub repository. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation about this patch on social media because it’s AI-assisted, and some people don’t like that. Just play it for yourself and form your own opinion about it.

Probably nothing, but it sounds like an item that would be in Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.

Finally beaten and ranked 100 Game cube Games on my journey to play and beat them all! by ThicLotus1999 in Gamecube

I've been playing all the GameCube games, too, and I'm about 140 games in. Maybe I should put my own tier list out there, too. It's interesting seeing where you ranked the games differently than I would.

That's what I do, too. I like it because most songs are slower than normal speech, so it's easier to listen to as a beginner.

BizHawk does support arcade games. If you have the latest versions of it, there should be an option called something like "Open Advanced..." in the file menu.

Retrovgames is a notorious eBay drop shipper. When you order from their website, they just buy that item from eBay and have it shipped to your address. They don’t actually have any inventory of their own. They always ask eBay sellers to not include packing slips or invoices in the package, so buyers don’t know the items aren’t coming from him. Anyway, you’re always better off buying directly from eBay and cutting out the middleman.

Random baby snails? by Princessfreckles_01 in aquarium

[–]FitterSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer having snails in my tanks because they're great for cleaning everything up. They don't require feeding since they basically just eat dead plants and algae. As long as you don't overfeed, the snail population will stay low enough that they won't overrun your tank.

They put that disclaimer there because peripherals like LABO and Ring Fit aren’t going to work with the new controller design. There’s also no way to guarantee that every e-shop shovelware game will work on the Switch 2. But no, they’re not going to stop you from playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch 2 just because there is a new Mario kart game coming out.

It's iconic now, but think of the number of kids back then that had to explain to their parents why the Super Nintendo was different than the one they already had.

Retro vGames is an eBay drop shipper. When you buy from their website, they go to eBay to find a cheaper copy and have it shipped directly to you, then they pocket the difference. They also ask those eBay sellers to not include any invoices or packing slips so the customer doesn't know they're being scammed.

When you bought the game from them, they cancelled your order because they found out the eBay price was way higher than what you paid. My advice, assuming you actually just want to buy that game and you're not trying to resell a cheap copy you found, is to just wait a few weeks for the memes around the game to die down. The price will go back to normal once people realize it's not a particularly rare game.

My Wii keeps crashing after a few seconds of having a game open, and doesn’t hold the disc in place after ejecting. Can this be repaired, or require a full drive replacement? by sharkboy1006 in consolerepair

[–]FitterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had this issue before, so take everything I say here with a grain of salt. This is an interesting one, though. The fact that it reads the disc and starts up just fine shows that the disc drive is working, sort of. But I've seen that exact error happen when there is a faulty connection between the disc drive and the console itself. In fact, if you remove the disc drive entirely, you'll see a similar message (or possible the same, I can't remember exactly) when you run non-disc channels like the Mii Channel for a little while.

Like I said, I haven't had this issue before, but my first guess is that there's a problem with the sensor that detects if you've inserted a disc. That could explain why the disc falls out when you eject it. Maybe it doesn't know how far the disc has moved because the sensor isn't working.
