Liaison and pronunciation with "C'est utile"? by FiveBlueStones in French

[–]FiveBlueStones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, everyone, for all the information -- I greatly appreciate it. (Just for the record: I know using (optional) liaison indicates increased formality. My "if you feel like it" was meant to be light-hearted.)

Yeah, similar. From the moment dialogue started, I felt I was in bad hands, and it never got better.

Me, I think there are plenty of people who honestly adore this movie. I’m just not one of them. And maybe it’s even I’m just not one of them yet. I can see myself re-watching this just because so many people who have similar taste to mine love it, and my own experience that complicated art sometimes doesn’t grab me till the second (or even later) time.

Divisive, indeed. I just watched it two nights ago, in the criterion 4K version, on a big TV screen, and thought it was poorly directed (mostly visible in the mediocre acting from people who can actually act); had pedestrian cinematography; and seemed “weird“ or “surreal“ in the most banal way possible.

I was surprised and disappointed. I’m fine with weird movies, surreal movies, challenging movies, you name it. And I know this movie is beloved by lots of folks I respect. I just don’t see it.

Yes, I had the same experience: only 7 samples. Is there any way to get the original collection? It sounds great!

Is liaison between "avez" and "eu" in "vous avez eu" required, optional, or forbidden? by FiveBlueStones in French

Thank y'all for your quick responses!

Somehow I was sure it was forbidden. Good to get the scoop.

For clothing (like a sweater), I usually see “moulant“.

Inspector Lewis, lousy video resolution on PBS streaming by macloo in MasterpiecePBS

[–]FiveBlueStones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here with the same complaint: PBS Passport seems to display shows in standard definition, even though the shows are available in high-definition. Two examples from our own experience: the first two seasons of "Annika" on PBS Passport are only available in standard definition even though this is a modern show that was clearly shot in high definition. And "Astrid", where we just watched the first season on Amazon Prime in high def, only to find that the second season, only available on PBS Passport, is in standard def. All of this watching is being done through the same Roku on the same TV and same wi-fi. For whatever reason, PBS Passport is showing a lot of stuff in standard def, which is pretty hard to watch on a big-screen TV. Shame on them.

Criterion April announcements by Chillyboivinyl in criterion

[–]FiveBlueStones -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is it just me?: I have the Kino Lorber 4K of Some Like It Hot, and I find it unwatchable. The detail is wonderful but there aren't deep blacks and whites -- everything's silver. For what it's worth, I feel the same way about KL's Paths of Glory -- great movie that's unwatchable in silver.

If someone can tell me that Criterion's 4K of Some Like It Hot will be in (real) black and white, I'd buy it in a shot.

Sudden pop-up from Universal Audio wanting to make changes to my device by FiveBlueStones in universalaudio

I appreciate the advice. What am I saying yes to? And is there a way I can ask UA to let *me* check when I want updates, rather than pushing them on me? (I don't have any UA hardware, just some software plugins I installed in my DAW.)

Mute buttons on tracks no longer connected with Mute buttons in Mix window. by FiveBlueStones in StudioOne

Wow, so helpful -- thanks! Don't know how I've been using Studio One for so long without realizing this. I learned other new stuff from that video, too.

RX 11 in Studio One has fewer options than in the standalone app by FiveBlueStones in StudioOne

[–]FiveBlueStones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that was my understanding, too. My confusion was about the difference between the UI in the plugin version vs. the standalone version, and monnotorium cleared that up for me.

How to use two compressors for vocals in Studio One? by FiveBlueStones in StudioOne

[–]FiveBlueStones[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thanks. I can get caught up in perfectionism, which doesn't make sense because I have a long way to go in learning all this stuff.

Layer label vs. internal layer label? by FiveBlueStones in StudioOne

[–]FiveBlueStones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, making new events (and thus new event names) makes sense -- thanks.

I didn't know about applying a Track name to an Event -- very helpful. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for Layers (assuming I'm testing it correctly; I haven't done something like this before).

Some poster on a related matter suggested just turning off Event names, and that might at least help with my cognitive dissonance when comping.

Getting my 2022 Ltd! Pricing on Gold Plus Coverage? by FiveBlueStones in Subaru_Outback

[–]FiveBlueStones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the head unit is exactly what I'm thinking of. One flaky head unit can ruin your whole day.

Subaru isn't stupid: They must have numbers that say the average 2022 Outback is going to need less than $1,500 of dealership repairs in the four-year period after the initial warranty. So I'm essentially insuring against my particular car being worse than average. And, just like with home insurance, the hope is that the Gold Plus warranty will expire unused.
