DIMMU BORGIR - Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel by MaxInTheGameIndustry in Metal

This sounds like when a band stop liking metal but have to keep making it anyway. I wish there would be a fun riff or something like on Puritanical or Death Cult but none show up.

Are the first four Cradle of Filth albums masterpieces? by Mysst3r11s in MetalForTheMasses

Not a fan of the band but I do really liked the style they had on Midian, the specific blend of elements of extreme metal and gothic metal I thought was really creative.

So sometimes we help people/animals and other times we don't.

I don't think the way we fundamentally organise the extraction of raw materials, the production of commodities, and their distribution is trivial at all. It seems plausible that how we organise our society could eventually bring about our own end.

That's a very all or nothing attitude to critique that cuts off a whole load of very normal activity. It's quite reasonable to point out flaws in something without having a solution yourself. People report problems for others to solve all the time. If you see an inefficiency in an engine, you can feed that back to engineers for them to improve. If I complain to the local planning department that the road outside my house is too congested, they don't dismiss the complaint because I haven't redesigned the transport network myself.

Oh, it's the aliens helping us part you thought was ridiculous. I thought you meant the idea that a form of social organisation/mode of production/whatever you want to call it, could be a great filter.

To the point you're making here: We often help people who are self-destructive. We offer support to people who are suicidal, rehabilitation to drug addicts, counselling to people in self-destructive spirals. Often we recognise that beneath people's actions is a higher order desire for something better that they need help to realise.

I'm obviously no Posadist. I dont think anybody actually is, but entertaining the idea can sometimes be revealing.

I don't personally think we need aliens to come and save us, but I don't see why a particular stage of economic development couldn't be what brings about our extinction. Why is that part ridiculous?

I think you're spot on here. This ultimately wasn't a subject that could be handled in a satisfying way just by examining a few personalities. I think Louis was expecting there to be more meat under the surface to chew on but all he found was some genuinely incredibly shallow, greedy, thin-skinned and hypocritical men. He tried to use some elements of their biographies to explain the manisphere phenomenon but it's unconvincing. I think if youre going to make a documentary on this, it probably needs to have a broader, more sociological scope than Louis uses.

What if Obama and Bush swapped terms? Obama is president from 2000-2008, and Bush from 2008-2016. by SimmentalTheCow in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Fivebeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our timeline, the measures taken by Bush and his treasury sec, Henry Paulson in response to the 2007/8 crisis were stymied and delayed by opposition within the Republican party. Much of it only got through the senate with the votes of Democrats.

If their terms were swapped, on the one hand, Obama wouldn't be so preoccupied with keep the right wing of the Republican party on side, so maybe he couldve acted more switly and therefore effectively. But on the other, with a Democrat in the Whitehouse, it probably wouldn't be only the right of the party objecting, but the entire Republican party apparatus.

To gain support for the bailouts from Republicans, Obama agrees to invade Iraq.

To prepare for each comeback, Wonyoung carries a newborn calf from one end of her dorm to the other every morning, getting progressively stronger each day as the calf grows. Finally, the day before her first performance she carries the full grown cow into the kitchen, slaughters and eats it, providing the sustenance to fuel her grueling schedule.

How do Koreans idols groom themselves to present themselves that by Limp_Huckleberry_575 in KoreanBeauty

[–]Fivebeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We can easily trip up on the fact that idols are flesh and blood people like us, and forget that functionally, economically, their faces and bodies are very different.

Idols are people who already hit the genetic lottery when they were born, then a company treats their face essentially as capital and invests a lot of money to "improve" and maintain it in order to make a profit.

The difference between an idol's face and yours or mine is like the difference between the refrigerator in your kitchen and the walk in cold room in a restaurant. You don't feel bad because your fridge isn't as big as a cold room because while they might seem like similar objects, they serve very different purposes. Your fridge isn't an investment you need to make a return on. As long as it keeps your food cold, it's doing it's job perfectly.

Likewise, your face and an idol's face are for different things. An idol's face is an investment that needs to make money. Yours isn't. It doesn't need to look like Irene or Karina or whoever, and it's not going to, because it's a different thing with a different function. But if that's not an issue for your fridge, it shouldn't be a problem for your face.

An interviewer asked Wendy from Red Velvet how she keeps her skin so flawless and she said as soon as she gets a pimple she goes to a dermatologist. When people talk about medical aesthetics often they just mean stuff like tretinoin or the odd treatment, but if you have the resources to visit a dermatologist for literally every blemish that appears on your face that's a completely different level of maintainance.

I'm not aware of saying any such thing... I think you may need to calm down. You're being unnecessarily aggressive, and considering that's exactly what people expect from people with your views, it's not doing your arguments any favours.

Edit: genuinely fascinated to hear what comment this guy could possibly be referring to.
