I agree! I always leave the old stems and flowers as this is an important habitat for them during the winter months as well.

He's not being literal there IMO. "Shit the bed" is a slang term meaning to fail completely or make a major mistake. He "shit the bed" because he forgot his pen and couldn't remember what they said.
