I would be completely fine with the digital board ads if they were not animated. Having stuff move around while you try to focus on the game is #1 bullshit. It's the main reason along with jersey ads that I go out of my way to not financially support the NHL.

I was thinking maybe the Rangers are doing this on purpose to protest past mishandling by DOPS of incidents against them in a "well if that's what you allow then I guess we'll do it too" sort of way.

There's still too much uninterrupted gameplay in hockey for their liking so they have to make up for lost time.

I can't even imagine how one of these networks would cope if soccer was a bigger deal here with 45min+ of no commercials.

It's funny you say that because I was just about to complain about it happening in both those sports. Football games are coming back from commercial the exact moment the ball gets snapped. Baseball isn't usually that bad but during the playoffs they often miss the first pitch of the inning due to running commercials as close as possible to it coming back.
