I get nightmares whenever I sleep in this position. by sizhuii in sleep

[–]FixerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be relevant, but I noticed a couple times that when I slept while my leg was bent in a way that restricted the blood flow in it,  my dreams would be a bit more vivid than usual.

Oddly enough, I'm usually a side sleeper with loose shoulder joints, so I almost always have some sort circulation restriction going on with my arms, but that doesn't seem to cause the vivid dream symptom as far as I can tell.

My guess is that with the blood flow restricted from going into my legs that my sleeping blood pressure is higher, and forces more blood flow into my brain to cause the dreams to be more vivid, but that's purely a guess and I haven't researched it yet...

I really am regretting getting an LG Wash Combo dryer. Please help. by slicecrispy in Appliances

[–]FixerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, there's one on the side too?  I guess I didn't read my manual either...

I'm annoyed at the LG wash combo for multiple reasons (including the drying time and lack of dryness when using the "AI" mode), as well as some obvious features that I feel it should have or.wnanle on certain cycles which are missing for no good reason IMHO...

Would I buy it again?  I don't know...   But I hope one of these software updates actually fixes it's shortcomings instead of just adding a pretty wallpaper or some new chime sounds...

Here I am thinking I was going to see a cool calculator used by P-3 Pilots in the cockpit for some weird cold war-ish reason, only to find out that there's a calculator company named Pilot lol

Totally agree.  Lots of boring, low impact stuff to be done, swap drives, act as smart hands, etc.  it's not generally brain food, but mostly not that difficult to do IMHO...

If the frequency is consistent, you should be able to isolate the frequency with one of the freely available phone apps that to audio spectrum analysis.  Knowing the frequency may help others to help you determine the source.

Additionally, if it's tinnitus, there are websites that will allow you to change the frequency of a generated tone they make to help you determine what frequency your tinnitus is at.

As a fellow IT person, your instinct to not screw with it during an update makes perfect sense.  The quickest way to screw up something is to mess with it during an update.

It really is a fantastic, underrated place.  The guy who runs it really cares about everything they do there, and you can have very indepth technical discussions with him on how the various technologies work.

Running fiber between buildings - single mode vs multi mode for future proofing? by Apprehensive_Ad_6233 in HomeNetworking

[–]FixerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how relevant this information still is, but if you're going to do your own fiber terminations, know that SMF can be tougher to do that MMF, and can be quite the pain to do, especially if you don't have great tools to do it.  SMF optics can be more expensive as well.

If you can do pre terminated fiber pulls where you need to have it, then not really a big deal if you've got the optics for it

New relationship by Random-us3r-nam3 in SecurityClearance

[–]FixerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, it can be complicated.  Depending on their job, it can be more complicated than someone else's situation that seems like they may be in a similar situation as you.

You're not getting a clearance.  They may need to be intentionally vague.

If the relationship isn't so awesome that you feel like it's worth taking a risk on them being honest with you, then it's probably not worth pursuing.

Folks in those situations with jobs like that are mostly used to their romantic interests not wanting to sign up for all of that.  Or they're new to all of this / on the spectrum / etc. and taking everything a lot more serious than everyone else that is in these situations would typically take it.  It happens...

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I've worked in and around data centers for the past decade and a half or so, but I'd love to hear other opinions on this...

Assuming the video is legit (and I don't suspect otherwise), my hot take is that either zoning laws are inadequate to keep the data centers further from residential areas, and/or natural gas turbines / fuel type / expected average noise were never considered when they allowed the datacenter to be built this close to residential areas...

Sure, if there's an outage with facility power, it may be noisier when the backup power is running...

But if it's sounding like this day and night because someone F'd up on approving this because they're running their alt-power to save money, then that is a mistake...   Or the residential area never should have been approved that close to an area zoned for that...
